Athletes of the Week

Andre Forde had three touchdown receptions to lead the Bulls to a 34-11 victory at Rutgers. Forde finished with 165 all-purpose yards for the game. Two of his acrobatic touchdowns in the second half sealed the game for the Bulls. He finished the game with five receptions for 75 yards and added 90 yards in kickoff and punt returns.

Melissa Burrows of the women's cross-country team finished in fourth place in a 42-runner field at the season-opening Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron, Ohio. Burrows completed the 5K course in a personal-best time of 18:34, shaving more than 40 seconds from last season's mark at the same meet when she finished 10th.

Football

UB 34, Rutgers 11

Dominating all sides of the ball, UB scored a convincing 34-11 victory over Rutgers in Rutgers Stadium on Saturday, besting a Big East team for the first time since returning to the Division I ranks. The win evened UB's record to 1-1 on the season.

There were many stars for UB on Saturday, but none more deserving than senior flanker Andre Forde, who received the game ball. Forde caught three touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Randall Secky and finished with 165 all-purpose yards for the game. His two acrobatic touchdowns in the second half sealed the game for UB, which got a sensational effort from a defensive unit allowed the Scarlet Knights to just 221 yards of total offense.

The Bulls will host future Big East member Connecticut on Saturday, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. Extreme skateboard icon Tony Hawk will be on hand for an exhibition in the UB Extreme Zone prior to the game.

Volleyball

The Bulls went 0-4 last week, getting their first taste of life away from Alumni Arena. UB opened the week with a three-game loss at Cleveland State on Sept. 3 by scores of 30-25, 30-23 and 30-23. Juniors Lindsay Matikosh and Alexis Bouie led the Bulls' attack with eight kills apiece, and Matikosh also added a team-high nine digs, while Bouie added a team-high four blocks.

UB spent the weekend in Chicago at the Quality Inn/University of Illinois-Chicago Invitational. On Friday, the Bulls dropped a three-game match to the host Flames, 30-15, 30-24, 30-14. Bouie led the Bulls' effort with team-highs of nine kills and four blocks.

The weekend concluded with a pair of losses, 3-1 to Iowa and 3-2 to Binghamton.

Soccer

Men's

Bucknell 2, UB 0
UB 2, Robert Morris 2

Despite getting off twice as many shots as Robert Morris, UB only could manage a 2-2 tie against the Colonials in the final day of the Bulls Fall Invitational on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, the Bulls got on the board early in the second stanza when freshman T.J. Osbourne scored on a breakaway in the 49th minute for a 1-0 lead. It was Osbourne's first career goal. UB held the lead until the 71st minute when Jamie Dodds scored on a penalty kick to tie the contest, 1-1. Robert Morris went ahead just six minutes later when Ben Abebe scored off of a corner kick at the 76:28 mark. The Bulls rallied back to tie the contest, 2-2, in the 83rd minute when Dave Pidgeon placed a high lofting pass that Geoff Thompson was able to head into the back of the net.

The score remained tied after regulation and no overtime was played.

UB dropped the tournament opener, 2-0, Saturday afternoon to Bucknell.

Women's

UB 1, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 1
Purdue 4, UB 0

UB fell to Purdue, 4-0, in the finals of the Purdue Boilermaker Challenge Cup on Sunday. It was the first loss of the season for the Bulls, who are now 0-1-3 on the 2002 campaign.

Purdue struck early and often in the game, scoring four first-half goals.

The Bulls had advanced to tournament finals after tying Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 1-1, on Friday. UB won a shootout to earn the right to play Purdue.

Cross country

Squads compete in Akron invitational

The men's and women's cross-country teams opened the 2002 season at the Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The men placed third in the four-team meet with 45 points, narrowly falling to Ohio State (41) and Kent State (43). Akron was fourth at 97 points. In the women's race, UB placed fourth in the four-team field with 78 points. Akron took first place with 32 points, while Kent State (42) and Ohio State (66) placed second and third, respectively.

UB senior Todd Ludden won the men's individual title with his 20:05 clocking along the four-mile distance at Indigo Lake Course. Senior Jerimie Slick raced to a fourth-place individual finish in 20:21.

Leading the UB women was senior Melissa Burrows, who completed the 5,000-meter women's course in 18:54 to finish fourth.

Tennis

Women's

Niagara 6, UB 1

UB opened the 2002-03 campaign with a 6-1 loss to visiting Niagara University Saturday afternoon at the UB Tennis Center.

Sophomore Michaela Kollarova, playing third singles, defeated Niagara's Colleen Willick in a tiebreaker for UB's lone point.

The Bulls' top-seeded doubles duo of Karen Maynard and Kristen Ortman defeated Willick and Milena Matijevic, 8-4. However, Niagara picked up the match's doubles point with victories at numbers two and three.
