Athletes of the Week

Olszewski scored on a penalty kick on Friday and earned the assist on the game-winning goal in overtime on Sunday. The goal and assist were her first of the season and moved her to ninth place on UB's all-time points list with 42.

Football

Minnesota 41, UB 17

The University of Minnesota gave UB a lesson in Big 10 power football on Saturday before 34,294 fans in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

The Golden Gophers piled up 299 yards on the ground in a 41-17 victory over the Bulls. It was the Bulls' first game against a Big 10 opponent since 1901.

UB, which trailed at one point, 31-0, never gave up, however, and made the game much closer than the final score suggested.

Volleyball

UB 3, Binghamton 2
UB 3, Canisius 2
UB 3, Youngstown State 1
UB 3, Niagara 0

It was an exciting week for the volleyball team, winning four matches—including three at the Holiday Inn Western New York Invitational.

The Bulls have eclipsed last season's five victories with their current 8-6 record, and gave head coach Sally Kus her 100th collegiate coaching victory.

UB earned a five-game win at Binghamton on Sept. 17, rallying to take the final two games of the match and avenge an earlier season loss to the Bearcats.

The Bulls opened the weekend tournament on Saturday with another five-game match, winning in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion at Canisius College.

UB swept Youngstown State and Niagara in Alumni Arena on Sunday to complete the tournament with an undefeated record.

Soccer

MEN'S

Niagara 2, UB 1
UB 3, Siena 1
Binghamton 1, UB 0

UB dropped a hard-fought, 2-1, decision to Niagara on Sept. 18 to begin a three-match road week.

A foul-plagued first half ended in a 1-1 tie. But the Purple Eagles struck in the second half, as Paul Vanden Boomen headed the ball into the far corner of the net, securing the win for Niagara.

The Bulls exploded for three second-half goals en route to a 3-1 non-conference win at Siena on Friday.

And on Sunday, The Bulls dropped a heartbreaker at Binghamton as a misfired deflection by a UB defender into his own goal just two minutes into the second half gave Binghamton a 1-0 victory.

WOMEN'S

UB 2, Central Michigan 2 (2 OT)
UB 2, Eastern Michigan 1 (2 OT)

Overtime has been the theme of the season for UB's women's soccer team. The Bulls played to a fourth tie on Friday with a 2-2 knotting against MAC foe Central Michigan. UB then recorded an overtime victory on Sunday, 2-1, against Eastern Michigan to push its record to 2-2-4 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.

Against Central Michigan, UB scored a go-ahead goal in the 71st minute but then gave up a game-tying goal less than six minutes that resulted in the 2-2 for the Bulls' home opener.

On Sunday, Andrea Sullivan's goal at 1:44 into the second overtime, gave the Bulls a 2-1 win over Eastern Michigan.

Cross Country

Bulls post strong numbers at Miami Fall Classic

The men's and women's cross-country teams recorded some impressive times Saturday afternoon at the Miami Fall Classic held in Oxford, Ohio. The men placed second with 49 points behind the host RedHawks' 30. In the women's meet, UB scored 68 points to finish in third behind MAC rivals Miami (23) and Akron (42).

Individually, three Bulls' men placed among the top 10 racers: senior Jerimie Slick was second on the 8K course in 24:52, senior Todd Ludden took fourth in 24:54 and senior Rick Stewart finished seventh in 25:12.

For the women, senior Melissa Burrows completed the 5K distance in 18:26 to take sixth place overall.

Tennis

MEN'S

Kasiman reaches finals of Brown Invitational

UB traveled to Providence, R.I. for the Brown Fall Invitational, a flighted tournament featuring several of the top teams in the Northeast. In the A1 flight, senior Fery Kasiman reached the finals, but dropped the championship match to Dartmouth's Neal Bobba, 6-1, 6-3 to finish second overall. Sophomore Josh Liederman won the consolation round in the A4 flight, downing Harvard's Yusuf Randera-Roos, 6-2, 6-4, in the final.

WOMEN'S

UB 6, St. Bonaventue 1
UB 5, St. Francis 2

UB scored a 6-1 win over local rival St. Bonaventure on Saturday and then dropped St. Francis, 5-2, on Sunday for an undefeated weekend.

Against the Bonnies, the Bulls won five of six singles matches. UB also won the number three, four, five and six matches on the afternoon.

In the win over the Red Flashes, freshman Kristen Ortman led the team, winning her number-two singles match over Lesley Wenzel, 6-0, 6-3, and pairing with Karen Maynard to take the top doubles match, 8-1.
