Members of the University Advancement staff were recognized recently during the annual Awards for Excellence Program sponsored by SUNY/CUAD (Council for University Advancement and Development), the professional organization for SUNY advancement professionals. The winning entries, categories and those whose hard work contributed to the efforts:

  • Buffalo Physician, Best of Category Award, 1- to 3-color magazines category, Stephanie Unger, Alan Kegler, David Riley, Karen Lichner, Sue Wuetcher, Lois Baker and Ellen Goldbaum

  • UB Today, Best of Category Award, full-color magazines category, Ann Whitcher, Becky Farnham and Sue Wuetcher

  • Science, medicine and research news releases written by Lois Baker and Ellen Goldbaum, Best of Category Award, news-writing category

  • National media relations work by John Della Contrada, Judges' Citation, media relations category

  • "The Power of Ten," the president's office 10 year report, Judges' Citation, institutional relations publications category, Becky Farnham, Jud Mead, Reanna Kaopuiki. Also contributing to the project were Kathryn Sawner and Frank Miller, both of whom have left UB.

Ilene Fleischmann, associate dean for alumni and communications in the Law School and executive director of the UB Law Alumni Association, has received the 2003 Community Relations Award from the American Jewish Committee (AJC), Buffalo/Niagara Chapter. Fleischmann was recognized for her commitment and dedicated service to the community.

George Nancollas, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Larkin Professor in the Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, has received the 2002-03 Annual Service Award from the Science Teachers Association of New York State, Western Section. Nancollas serves as director of the Western New York Science and Technology Forum, which shares new developments in science, technology and mathematics with high school teachers in the natural sciences and mathematics.

Michael P. Sanfilipo, a student in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, was awarded a 2003 Alpha Omega Alpha Student Research Fellowship. The fellowship provides $3,000 to support student research.
