Susan Neumeister, head of Bibliographic Control, Central Technical Services, UB Libraries, won the Gold Medal in the 20th annual American Library Association 5K Walk, held on June 22 during the ALA's annual conference in Toronto. With a winning time of 35:25, Neumeister beat a field of 36 men and women racers, besting the time of the event's winner for the past three years by nearly four minutes.

John Della Contrada, national media director in the Office of News Services, won a Bronze Excalibur Award for the university's national media relations program from the Buffalo/Niagara Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The awards honor the best public-relations programs and projects from PR agencies, businesses and organizations throughout Erie and Niagara counties. Donald Gorlaski, project staff associate for the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research, received the May C. Randazzo Outstanding PR Practitioner Award.

WBFO 88.7 FM, the National Public Radio affiliate operated by UB, won two awards in the 2003 New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association Radio Contest. Reporter Eileen Buckley received first place in the category of "General Excellence of Individual Reporting" for her coverage of the "Lackawanna Six" story. Buckley's reports were broadcast nationwide on NPR and she provided analysis of the case for Fox News Channel. News Director Mark Scott received a special mention in the "Best Interview" category for his interview with Jim Fagan prior to Fagan's induction into the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In the past decade, the WBFO News Department has received 25 AP awards, as well as three prestigious national awards from the Public Radio News Directors, Inc., and three from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The work of the Division of Athletics was recognized at the annual National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) workshop, held last month in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. UB's 2002-03 basketball campaign and its 2002 football season-ticket brochure both received top honors among all entries in their respective categories. The 2002-03 men's basketball poster took another gold award, while the women's basketball poster won a bronze award. UB also won a bronze award in the football commercial category.

Martin Brecher, M.D. '72, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and associate professor of pediatrics at UB, was honored with the Spirit of Teddi Humanitarian Award at the second annual Camp Good Days Creative Black Tie Gala, held on June 21. Brecher was recognized for the treatment and medical care he has provided over the years to children dealing with cancer, as well as his support of Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc., which operates camping and year-round programs for children with cancer.
