The sirens will be real, but fortunately, the flames will not.

Porter 2 in the Ellicott Complex, North Campus will be the setting tonight for an emergency exercise involving University Police and staff from the Office of Environment, Health & Safety Services and University Residence Halls and Apartments, as well as Getzville Fire and Hose and other area mutual aid companies, including Rural Metro Ambulance and the Town of Amherst disaster coordinator.

The exercise, to begin at 7 p.m., will give all the organizations involved experience in dealing with a building fire and rescue of occupants in the Ellicott Complex, says James Guy, fire and life safety manager for Environment, Health and Safety Services.

The exercise involves only a fire scenario; no "hazardous wastes" will be part of the drill, Guy notes, adding that both students and staff members will play the roles of Porter occupants who will be evacuated during the "fire."

The exercise provides both the public safety entities and UB staff the opportunity to interact and work with their emergency plans, he says.

While Environment, Health and Safety Services regularly stages exercises on the South Campus involving Buffalo fire and mutual aid organizations, it's also important to stage such exercises on the North Campus as well, since different public safety organizations have jurisdiction on that campus, Guy says.
