WBFO wins NYS broadcasters award
WBFO 88.7 FM, the National Public Radio affiliate operated by UB, received an award for "Best Commentary, Editorial or Documentary" at the New York State Broadcasters Association's 38th Annual Award for Excellence in Broadcasting Competition.
The station was recognized for a commentary written by Gary Earl Ross, associate professor in the Educational Opportunity Center and an occasional on-air essayist for the station, entitled "What if Thurmond had been elected?"
The essay, which aired in December 2002, is a fictional account of what the United States would have been like if Strom Thurmond, longtime Republican senator from South Carolina, had been elected president in 1948, as wished for by former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott.
The author of more than 130 short stories, scholarly papers, poems, articles and public radio essays, Ross speaks about topics ranging from black film history to education to classic murder cases. He is a member of the just buffalo literary center Writers in Education Program.
