Athletes of the Week

Randall Secky of the football team threw for a career-best 350 yards on 29-of-43 passing with three touchdowns and no interceptions in UB's 34-32 loss at Ohio on Saturday. His 29 completions tied for fourth all-time for a single game and his 350 passing yards is the 11th-best total in school history. This season, he has thrown eight touchdown passes and completed nearly 52 percent of his attempts.

Melissa Burrows of the cross-country team was the top finisher for the UB women at the Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday. Burrows, a senior, completed the 6K distance in 22:46.8 to place 38th among a field of 263 runners. The Bulls placed 12th in the 25-team meet against some of the best competition they have seen this season, including top powers Missouri, Wake Forest and Yale.

Football

Ohio 34, UB 32

UB went from one of the most improbable comebacks in school history to one of the most disappointing losses in just a few minutes.

Ohio kicker Kevin Kerr drilled a 37-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 34-32 Mid-American Conference win over UB after the Bulls had rallied to take the lead from a 19-point second-half deficit.

The Bulls (1-4, 0-1 MAC) had come back from that deficit to gain their only lead of the game on a 29-yard field goal by Dallas Pelz with 4:39 remaining. That field goal capped a 29-3 rampage by the Bulls after Ohio had taken a 28-9 lead with just 5:01 remaining in the third quarter.

The loss spoiled a tremendous effort by the Bulls as a team and several players who had career-defining games.

UB, trailing 21-3 at the half, rallied in the second half. The Bulls capped an 80-yard drive to open the second half when quarterback Randall Secky hit freshman Ramon Guzman with a six-yard strike for a touchdown on Guzman's first-ever touchdown as a Bull. However, the extra point by Pelz was missed, leaving the score at 21-9.

Ohio appeared to salt the game away when it answered with a 66-yard drive on 10 plays, capped by a one-yard Dontrell Jackson touchdown run to make it 28-9 with 5:01 remaining. Again, however, the Bulls would not go away.

Secky, running a no-huddle offense almost the entire second half, brought the Bulls back again. Freshman tailback Aaron Leeper scored his fourth touchdown of the season from six yards out to cut the lead to 28-16.

After a 39-yard field goal by Kerr made it 31-16 in favor of the Bobcats, the Bulls again rallied, this time via a turnover. Sophomore J.J. Gibson, who had nine tackles on the day, forced a fumble by Jackson that was recovered by Rodney Morris at the UB 48. Morris had a tremendous game for the Bulls with a career-best 13 tackles (12 solos) and a pass breakup.

Secky then connected on five-of-seven passes and drove the Bulls 52 yards in eight plays, capped by an acrobatic touchdown reception in the corner of the end zone by senior flanker Andre Forde. UB's two-point conversion try failed, however, and the Bulls still trailed, 31-22, with 10:35 remaining.

After forcing an Ohio punt, UB took just three plays to put a jolt into the Bobcats. Secky connected on a crossing pattern with Forde that the senior turned into a pulsating, 60-yard touchdown catch to cut the lead to 31-29 with 6:32 remaining. UB forced another turnover when Jackson was stripped by junior captain Lamar Wilcher and senior corner Mike Lambert pounced on it.

The Bulls took their first lead of the game five plays later when Pelz drilled a 29-yard field goal with 4:39 remaining, stunning the Peden Stadium crowd. The Bobcats, who converted 11-of-17 third-down conversions in the game, had one last drive in them as well.

Ohio converted a third-and-six at its own 17 on a 15-yard pass from Jackson to Chad Brinker and got into field-goal range on a 32-yard hookup from Jackson to Ray Houston. OU also converted another third down when Brinker went six yards on a third-and-four from the UB 27. That set up Kerr's decisive kick, ruining a tremendous effort by the Bulls.

The kick also spoiled outstanding performances by Secky and Forde, both of whom had career days. Secky was 29-of-43 passing for 350 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Forde, meanwhile, became just the second player in school history to go over the 200-yard receiving plateau in a game, catching a career-best 12 balls for 202 yards and finding the end zone twice.

The Bulls will host Western Michigan in a MAC clash in UB Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Volleyball

Akron 3, UB 0
Marshall 3, UB 1

UB (8-8, 0-2 MAC) opened its MAC slate with a loss at Akron, 30-19, 30-21, 31-29, snapping a season-high, four-match winning streak. The Bulls were led by junior Lindsay Matikosh with a match-high 18 digs and 10 kills. Senior Rebecca Ashare also recorded 10 kills, and sophomore Kathryn Henry added 15 digs. Freshman Amy Brown finished with 39 assists from the setter position.

The Bulls returned home to Alumni Arena, dropping Saturday's match to Marshall, 30-25, 29-31, 30-24, 30-17.

The Bulls jumped out to a 10-2 lead in game one, but Marshall rallied back behind the play of Isabell Anderer to take a 30-25 decision and go up 1-0 in the match. Game two was just the opposite, with Marshall holding early leads of 10-5, 19-11 and 20-13 before UB rallied to even things up.

The Bulls never led in the game until a kill by Henry put them up 30-29, and a solo block by junior Alexis Bouie on an attack attempt by Heidi Kuethe ended the game at 31-29 in UB's favor. The Thundering Herd was up 29-20 in game three before the Bulls began a rally to get within five, 29-24, but an attacking error by Bouie gave Marshall its final point in the game for a 30-24 victory. The Thundering Herd kept that momentum going into game four and easily earned a 30-17 win to end the match.

Matikosh led the Bulls with a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs, and Bouie added 10 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Molly Schrantz also posted double figures in kills with 10, and Henry finished with a match-high 17 digs.

The Bulls are next in action at Kent State on Wednesday. They return home to host Northern Illinois on Friday and Western Michigan on Saturday. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. in Alumni Arena.

Bowling Green 3, UB 0

Playing in its first MAC game of the season, UB (3-5-1, 0-1 MAC) was shut out, 3-0, by Bowling Green on Sunday.

The Falcons wasted little time getting on the board as they scored two goals in the game's first four minutes. Robert Aouad scored off a rebound of Bulls' goalkeeper Brian Wozniak at the 2:46 mark to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Paul Dhaliwal followed with a goal just 1:08 later to give Bowling Green a 2-0 advantage. Dhaliwal scored his second goal of the game at 75:30 to make the score 3-0.

Despite allowing three goals, Wozniak did make a season-high seven saves, which moves the senior netminder to sixth all-time in career saves at UB (195).

Ball State 2, UB 1
Miami 2, UB 0

UB dropped a 2-1 decision at Ball State on Friday to open its weekend road trip.

The Cardinals scored on a late first-half goal by Kate Nadalin at the 43:17 mark and a tally by Dee Nocero, off a feed from Nadalin, at the 52:16 mark. UB got on the board 10 minutes after Ball State's second goal, but it proved to be too little too late. Senior Megan Maul scored her first goal of the season from the top of the box, with the assist going to senior Andrea Sullivan.

The Bulls were outshot 21-11. Senior goalkeeper Emily Cox finished with seven saves.

On Sunday, the Bulls were shut out, 2-0, by Miami in Oxford, Ohio. Both of the RedHawks' goals were scored by junior Danielle Altiero. She scored her first goal at the 30:40 mark to give Miami a 1-0 lead. Altiero scored her second goal, on a breakaway, in the 81st minute to ice the game for the RedHawks.

The Bulls were outshot, 16-7, on the afternoon and did not attempt a corner kick. Miami goalkeeper Leigh Terry made five saves to earn her third career shutout. UB netminder Anna-Lesa Calvert made four saves and allowed both Miami goals.

The loss drops the Bulls to 2-4-4 overall and 2-3-1 in the MAC.

UB will host Canisius in the next home match at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Bulls see stiff competition at Meet of Champions
