Athletes of the Week

Mike Lambert of the football team registered three pass breakups and an interception at his own goal line—which he returned 87 yards, the third longest in school history—against Western Michigan on Saturday.

Kristen Ortman led the women's tennis team to a 7-0 win over crosstown rival Canisius College on Saturday. Ortman, a freshman playing at number one due to an injury to Karen Maynard, defeated Anne Nguyen, 6-1, 6-3 and also posted a doubles victory at number two.

Football

Western Michigan 31, UB 17

UB once again dug itself into a hole. And, once again, the team responded with a tremendous second-half rally. But on this day, the Bulls' special teams, which have been excellent through the first five weeks of the season, broke down at too many crucial times to allow UB to pull off a stunning comeback on Saturday in UB Stadium.

Instead, Western Michigan posted a 31-17 win before 8,112 fans. UB fell to 0-2 in the MAC and 1-5 overall.

Volleyball

Kent State 3, UB 1
Northern Illinois 3, UB 1
Western Michigan 3, UB 2

Last week was a rough one as the Bulls dropped three MAC matches, including two heartbreakers in Alumni Arena.

The Bulls opened the week with a four-game loss at Kent State on Oct. 2. UB lost the first game, 30-15, before tying the match up with a 30-27 win in game two, but the Golden Flashes ended the match with 30-20 and 30-25 wins in games three and four.

UB returned home Friday night with a four-game loss to the visiting Northern Illinois Huskies, 30-28, 30-24, 25-30, 30-28.

The Bulls made a run for their first MAC victory of the season, but came up just short with a 15-13 loss in game five to the visiting Western Michigan Broncos in Alumni Arena on Saturday. The Bulls lost games one and three by 32-30 and 30-25 scores, but both times rebounded to tie the match up with 30-24 and 30-23 wins in games two and four, respectively.

Soccer

MEN'S

UB 2, Marshall 1

UB picked up its first conference win of the season, defeating the host Marshall Thundering Herd, 2-1, on Sunday.

Geoff Thompson got the Bulls on the board first when he chipped the ball in from five yards out at the 39:30 mark to give UB a 1-0 lead.

The contest remained tight and heated until the 85th minute, when Mike Peplinski placed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal on a free kick to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead. Peplinski's goal, his fourth of the season, proved to be the game-winner as Marshall's Brent Sobczak scored with 11 seconds remaining in the game to spoil Chris Vavrina's first career shutout.

WOMEN'S

Niagara 2, UB 0

UB suffered a 2-0 loss to Niagara University on Oct. 2 in Lewiston. It marked the second straight game in which the Bulls have been shut out.

Niagara got both of its goals from Rosie Luzak, the nation's second leading scorer.

The loss drops the Bulls to 2-5-4. UB will host Marshall at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Cross Country

Slick wins individual title at LaSalle Invitational

The men's and women's cross-country teams were in action Saturday afternoon at the LaSalle Invitational. UB's men's squad placed sixth among 10 teams with 163 total points. UB's women took fifth place among eight entries, tallying 122 points. Pennsylvania (37) and Cornell (20) won the men's and women's team titles, respectively.

Senior Jerimie Slick was the individual winner in the men's 8K race. Slick completed the course in 25:09.68 to easily outdistance second-place Emory Mort of Cornell by nearly 40 seconds.

In the women's race, contested at 6K, freshman Kate Kohout was UB's top finisher, taking 24th place in 19:54.29.

UB will return home to host the UB Open on Saturday. Race time is noon.

Tennis

WOMEN'S

UB 7, Canisius 0

UB swept Saturday's match with cross-town rival Canisius College, 7-0, at the UB Tennis Center to give the Bulls a 3-1 record thus far in the 2002-03 season and better last season's mark of two victories.

Strong cross winds wreaked havoc on the players all morning but did not deter the Bulls, who did not drop a set to the Golden Griffins and allowed Canisius just six singles-game victories.

Three Bulls' singles victories were by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores: freshman Helen Lynch at number three, junior Lisa Wittman at number four and sophomore Wendy Rose at number five. Number-two player Michelle Kollarova and number-six Sheri Ugowski picked up 6-1, 6-0 victories in their respective matches. Freshman Kristen Ortman, playing at number-one singles due to an injury to Karen Maynard, registered a 6-1, 6-3 win to complete the singles sweep. UB also swept the doubles competition to earn the one doubles point.

Crew

Squads open strong in Pittsburgh

UB opened the crew season with Saturday's Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh. UB got strong performances from all four of its entries, with the Varsity 8 winning its race and the Novice 4 crew finishing second in its race by a slim margin.

Two other UB entries also fared well. The Novice 8 team recorded a sixth-place finish in its race and the Varsity 4 squad finished seventh.

The Bulls will be in home waters Saturday for the Head of the Niagara Regatta.
