Winterizing Your Home with the Web

As the weather begins to change and fall starts to show the first stray signs of the coming winter, many homeowners look for tips and suggestions for winterizing their homes. The World Wide Web can provide a great deal of information and assistance toward this end.

For example, Good Housekeeping magazine provides a series of checklists that are customized to winterizing your house or apartment. Visit http://magazines.ivillage.com/goodhousekeeping/myhome/ and select "My Home Checklists" in the left-hand column. Answer a few questions about your home and the site will do the rest.

Local information provider BuffaloAtHome.com is another great stop for information. Its "Projects of the Month" articles can help you winterize your house, car, pool or garden. The Web can be found at: http://www.buffaloathome.com/projects/october20011.asp

Do you have a dog that stays outside year-round? Your loving pooch needn't be uncomfortable—the Farmingdale Observer Web site includes an article on insulating a doghouse for the winter months. Just link to http://www.antonnews.com/farmingdaleobserver/1997/12/12/opinion/

Most Western New Yorkers seem to enjoy keeping the house a little cooler during those winter nights while keeping their beds warm and snug. Hints for a warmer bed can be found online at http://interiordec.about.com/library/weekly/aa100101a.htm, courtesy of the About.com "Guide to Interior Decorating."

About.com's "Home Buying/Selling Guide" also has a nice tip sheet for winterizing the home. It is available at http://homebuying.about.com/library/weekly/aa092002a.htm

Preparing for the winter months is something that few people really enjoy doing, but with the right attitude and good preparation, you should find your efforts rewarded with a warmer house and lower utility costs.
