Athletes of the Week

Geoff Thompson of the men's soccer team scored two goals to lead the Bulls past Kentucky, 2-1, on Saturday. The victory was the Bulls' first against the Wildcats in five meetings. Thompson, a senior playing in his final home game, scored in the first half to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead, then got the game-winner in the 79th minute when he headed in a corner kick to break a 1-1 tie. He leads the team with seven goals.

Emily Dills of the women's volleyball team scored the match-winning service ace to give the Bulls a 17-15 win in the deciding fifth game of a 3-2 win over Toledo on Friday, giving the Bulls their first conference win since the 1999 season and snapping a 49-match losing streak in the Mid American Conference. The junior finished with six kills and three blocks against the Rockets and followed that up on Saturday with a team-high 12 kills against Central Michigan—tying her career high—along with seven digs and two blocks.

Football

Miami (OH) 49, UB 0

UB was dominated in all phases of the game by Miami University on Saturday, dropping the Mid-American Conference contest—and homecoming game—49-0.

The RedHawks' evenly-distributed attack featured 236 yards on the ground and 251 yards through the air. It was the first time the Bulls had been shutout since a 35-0 loss in week two last year at Bowling Green. The Bulls managed just 175 yards of offense and turned the ball over three times on the afternoon.

The Bulls will attempt to redeem themselves on Saturday when they host MAC rival Kent State at 1 p.m. in UB Stadium.

Volleyball

UB 3, Toledo 2
Central Michigan 3, UB 1

UB snapped a 49-match losing streak in the MAC with a 3-2 win over visiting Toledo on Friday in Alumni Arena. A service ace by junior Emily Dills gave the Bulls a 17-15 win in the deciding fifth game, handing them their first MAC win of the season and first league victory since a 3-1 win over Ohio on Oct. 31, 1999.

The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Bulls dropped a 3-1 match to Central Michigan on Sunday in Alumni Arena, 30-16, 23-30, 30-22, 30-22. The loss drops UB's record to 9-14 overall and 1-8 in the MAC.

Soccer

MEN'S

Northern Illinois 2, UB 1 (2 OT)
UB 2, Kentucky 1

After battling hard to tie the contest in the late stages, UB dropped a heartbreaking, 2-1, double-overtime decision to Northern Illinois in a cold and steady rain on Friday night at RAC Field.

On Sunday, Geoff Thompson scored two goals to lead the Bulls to a thrilling, 2-1, decision over Kentucky at RAC Field. It was the Bulls' first-ever win over Kentucky in five tries.

With the win, the Bulls improve to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the MAC.

WOMEN'S

UB 1, Toledo 1 (2 OT)
Bowling Green 2, UB 1 (OT)

UB battled Toledo to a 1-1 tie on Friday afternoon in a cold and rainy affair at RAC Field.

Following a scoreless first half, Toledo got on the board first when Melissa Lesage took a pass from teammate Robin Davidson, raced down the left side and chipped the ball in over the outstretched hands of UB goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert. Emily Russell tied the contest in the 68th minute when she headed in a sensational centering pass from Natalia Crofut. The Bulls had incredible opportunities to score late in regulation and in the overtime periods. However, several of their shots either sailed just over or just wide of the net or hit the post.

Despite outshooting Bowling Green and holding a lead for much of the game, the Bulls fell to the Falcons, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at RAC Field. UB outshot the Falcons, 16-6, but in the end, Bowling Green slipped away with a 2-1 win.

The loss drops the Bulls to 4-7-5 overall and 3-5-2 in the MAC. It marks the seventh time this season that a UB game has been decided in overtime.

The Bulls will travel to Kent State for a match on Friday, and will return home on Sunday to host Ohio at 1 p.m. at RAC Field.

Cross Country

Slick takes second at Pre-Nationals

The men's and women's cross-country squads saw some of the stiffest competition of the year at the Asics/Pacesetter NCAA Pre-Nationals hosted by Indiana State University.

The UB men placed seventh among 24 teams in the Open Division with 214 points, while the Bulls' women took ninth in a 29-team field with 310 points.

Senior Jerimie Slick topped his career-best 8K mark with a 24:35.9 clocking to finish second overall, six seconds behind Montana's Antony Ford (24:29.3) in the 254-runner field. Slick's time bettered his previous best of 24:52.97 set last month at the Miami Fall Classic.

In the women's 6K race, senior Melissa Burrows led the Bulls in 22:25.9 to take 29th in the team race and 44th overall among the 275 runners.

The Bulls will compete in the MAC Championships on Nov. 2 in Oxford, OH.
