Athletes of the Week

Jerimie Slick of the men's cross-country team earned All-Mid-American Conference honors for the second consecutive season with his third-place finish at the league championship meet in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday. Slick completed the 8K course in 24:09.40, bettering his career-best by more than 25 seconds and last season's sixth-place finish by more than a minute.

Elizabeth Pfeffer of the women's soccer team scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the second overtime to lift the Bulls past Binghamton, 3-2. Pfeffer also earned an assist in the game on a second-half goal that gave UB a 2-1 lead. Pfeffer is tied for the team lead with four goals and 10 points this season as the Bulls head into the MAC Tournament.

Volleyball

Kent State 3, UB 1

UB dropped a four-game match to the visiting Kent State Golden Flashes on Friday in Alumni Arena, 20-30, 30-21, 30-28, 30-22

The loss dropped UB's record to 9-17 overall and 1-11 in the MAC.

The Bulls will travel to Marshall tomorrow and Ohio on Saturday.

Soccer

MEN'S

Canisius 1, UB 0

UB finished the 2002 regular season with a 1-0 loss to cross-town rival, Canisius College, at the Demske Sports Complex on Oct. 29. Golden Griffin Chris Robey's direct kick from 25 yards out sailed to the left side of the box and found the foot of Ryan Dummett, who slipped the ball inside the left post at the 3:41 mark of the first half to give the Griffs the only goal of the game.

Chris Vavrina, who got the starting nod in net for the Bulls, made two saves and allowed only one goal in the game.

The loss drops the Bulls to 6-8-1 on the season. The Bulls, who have qualified for the MAC Tournament, will face Kentucky in the quarterfinals tomorrow in Huntington, W.Va.

WOMEN'S

UB 3, Binghamton 2 (2 OT)

Elizabeth Pfeffer converted on a penalty kick late in the second overtime period to give the Bulls a 3-2 win over Binghamton at RAC Field on Oct. 31.

UB opened the scoring early in the contest when Emily Russell gained control of a rebounded shot from Meaghan Maul and drove it home at the 2:09 mark. The Bearcats answered back in the 40th minute, but UB regained the lead early in the second half when Pfeffer found a streaking Natalia Crofut, who ripped a shot past the Binghamton goalkeeper to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead. Binghamton answered back at the 63:13 mark.

The game remained tied after 90 minutes of play and the Bulls were forced into overtime for the eighth time this season.

At the 107:22 mark, Pfeffer was pulled down from behind in the box and converted the penalty kick to give the Bulls a 3-2 win.

With the win, the Bulls finish the regular season at 7-7-5.

Cross Country

Bulls finish with mixed results at MAC Championships

The men's and women's cross-country teams competed in the MAC Championships on Saturday at Miami University's Western Campus Course. The men finished sixth in a 12-team field with 170 points, but just 10 points shy of fourth place; the women placed 12th in a 13-team race with 305 points. Central Michigan, ranked eighth nationally, edged out seventh-ranked Eastern Michigan for the men's team championship, 39-40. Toledo breezed past the women's field with 51 points to win the title.

The Bulls' postseason meets will continue on Nov.16 when they head to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx for the NCAA Northeast Regionals.

Basketball

WOMEN'S

UB 74, Syracuse Action AAU 53 (exhibition)

UB put forth a solid performance in a 21-point victory over Syracuse Action in an exhibition game on Saturday in Alumni Arena.

The Bulls will open the regular season at St. John's on Nov. 22.

The first home game of the season will be against Colgate at 7 p.m. on Nov. 26 in Alumni Arena.

Swimming

MEN'S

Ohio 126, UB 117

UB opened the 2002-03 season with a 126-117 dual-meet loss to MAC power Ohio University on Saturday in Akron. Akron, which does not field a men's team, hosted the meet in conjunction with a women's tri-meet against UB and Ohio.

The Bulls held first place throughout the meet before losing the lead in the final event, the 400 free relay. Ohio picked up 13 points with first- and third-place finishes as the Bulls' quartet finished second, earning four points in the race.

Sophomore Mark Sy won three events for the Bulls.

The Bulls will open the home season on Saturday, hosting Ball State at 11 a.m. in the Alumni Arena Natatorium

WOMEN'S

Ohio 138, UB 105
Akron 141, UB 102

UB fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the MAC with a pair of losses at a tri-meet in Akron on Saturday. The Bulls fell to perennial league power Ohio, 138-105, and dropped a 141-102 decision to host Akron, a squad vastly improved from last season.

UB posted just a pair of victories in the meet, both by sophomore Jennefer Brankovsky. Brankovsky won the 200 breaststroke in 2:26.86, easily besting second-place Abby Fogel of Ohio by almost four seconds. Brankovsky also won the 200 backstroke in 2:08.74, just touching out Akron's Michelle Thomas by less than a second.

The Bulls will host Ball State and Bowling Green in the home opener at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Alumni Natatorium.
