Athletes of the Week

Rob Schroeder of the football team recorded a career-high six tackles, including five solos, in Saturday's game at Akron. The redshirt freshman defensive lineman also registered two quarterback sacks as the Bulls recorded a season-best five in the game. Among his six tackles, 3.5 were for losses. Schroeder has 33 tackles this season and leads the team with 4.5 sacks.

Lindsay Matikosh of the women's volleyball team became the fourth player in UB history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. The junior led the Bulls with 14 kills and 19 digs in a five-game loss to MAC East Division leader Akron. She also led the squad with nine kills, 16 digs and three blocks against Bowling Green on Friday. For the season, she leads the Bulls with 420 kills and 420 digs.

Football

Akron 21, UB 10

Mental mistakes and penalties offset an excellent defensive effort in UB's 21-10 loss to Akron in a Mid-American Conference game on Saturday in the Rubber Bowl.

Akron got a pair of touchdowns by Bob Hendry and forced three UB turnovers, as well as two key stops in the red zone, to extend the Bulls' losing streak to nine straight before 4,178 fans on a cold, drizzly day.

The UB defense limited Akron to 297 yards on the day, recorded five sacks and held the Zips to 1-of-12 on third-down conversions. Still, it wasn't enough, as Akron's defensive play stifled the Bulls at nearly every turn.

The Bulls' offense generated just 274 yards of total offense, gave up a season-high five sacks, and never got a consistent running game going.

UB finished with just 34 net yards rushing, thanks in part to the large sack total.

UB will complete the season with a game at Ball State on Saturday.

Volleyball

Akron 3, UB 2
Bowling Green 3, UB 0

UB played a hard-fought, five-game match but fell to the visiting Akron Zips by a 15-5 score in the fifth game of a MAC matchup on Nov. 12 in Alumni Arena.

In other action last week, the Bulls dropped a three-game decision at Bowling Green on Friday, 30-28, 31-29, 30-21.

The Bulls (9-21, 1-15 MAC) will host Ohio at 6 p.m. tomorrow and Miami (OH) at 5 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the 2002 season. Friday's match is a doubleheader with the UB men's basketball team, which is scheduled to tip off its season at 8:15 p.m. against Cornell following the volleyball match.

Cross Country

Squads post respectable finishes at Northeast Regionals

The men's and women's cross-country squads raced to respectable finishes at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet held Saturday. UB's men finished 12th among 33 scoring teams with 327 points, while the women took 14th in a 35-team field with 475 points.

The men's team also won the "SUNY Centers" title by virtue of finishing ahead of Binghamton and Albany, the other SUNY schools in the field. The women's team was second among SUNY schools, finishing behind Stony Brook but ahead of Albany and Binghamton.

Senior Jerimie Slick was the top UB men's finisher in the race. He completed the 10K course in 31:32.8 to finish 16th overall in a field of 223 runners. His finish, however, is probably not good enough to qualify Slick for an at-large berth in the upcoming NCAA Championship meet.

The UB women were led by senior Melissa Burrows, who finished the 6K course in 22:28.8 to place 53rd among the 238 runners.

Wrestling

Bulls finish seventh in strong Oklahoma Gold field

The wrestling team opened the 2002-03 campaign with a seventh-place finish at the highly competitive Oklahoma Gold Classic at Brockport State University on Saturday.

The Bulls had a trio of third-place finishers—sophomore Mike Sebaaly, junior Garrett Bontempo and sophomore Kyle Cerminara—that helped UB accumulate 70 points for the event, finishing seventh in a field of 10 strong teams. Oklahoma won the event with 183.5 points, with Ohio State (154.5), Cleveland State (144), Army (96) and Rutgers (86) rounding out the top five. Bloomsburg nipped UB by a half-point to claim sixth place.

Awards

Several Bulls named to academic teams

Five UB student-athletes were named to various academic teams last week.

Cross-country runners Jeff Czyz, Todd Ludden and Rick Stewart were named to the 2002 men's cross-country Academic All-Mid-American Conference team.

Football player Jeff Mills and volleyball player Rebecca Ashare earned 2002 Verizon Academic All-District I honors in their respective sports.

Czyz, a junior computer science major with a 3.89 GPA, participated in seven meets this season with a top 8K time of 27:00. Ludden, a senior mathematics major with a 3.36 GPA, saw action in six meets with three top-10 finishes this season. Stewart, a senior exercise science major with a 3.83 GPA, raced in seven meets for the Bulls this season and earned four top-10 finishes.

Mills, a junior offensive tackle, is part of a 26-man team that will advance to the national Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced on Dec. 12. The 6-5, 288-pound tackle was one of six repeat selections from the 2001 team. Mills has started 21 straight games for the Bulls, dating back to last year, and helped tailback Aaron Leeper break the freshman records for yards rushing and touchdowns scored in a season this year.

Mills was admitted to the University Honors Program upon arriving at UB, and is a double major in math and economics. He carries a 3.57 grade-point average.

Ashare, a senior middle hitter, was one of six players named to the first team, and she now advances to the national Academic All-America ballot. The national Verizon Academic All-America Volleyball Team will be announced on Dec. 5.

Ashare was a Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball Second Team selection in 2001, and she is a UB Scholar Athlete and a member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll. Ashare holds a 4.0 grade point average at UB while majoring in psychology, and she plans to forgo her final year of playing eligibility in 2003 to concentrate on pursuing a master's degree in clinical psychology.
