James Campbell, professor of political science presented an invited paper, "The 2000 Presidential Election of George W. Bush: The Difficult Birth of a Presidency," at a conference held recently at Fredonia State College on the way in which the Bush presidency has been transformed by a series of crises. He also was an invited presenter at Columbia University's "Conference on Electoral Politics," where he discussed "The Past, Present and Future of Forecasting American National Elections, 2000-04."

Claude E. Welch, Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Political Science, addressed the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO) during the organization's annual meeting held recently in Washington, D.C. Welch presented his reflections on the impact of NGOs on human rights throughout the world and chaired a 90-minute panel on that topic. WANGO is an international membership organization of NGOs worldwide that are united in the cause of advancing peace and well-being.

Juanita Hunter, an emeritus faculty member in the School of Nursing, recently received the Honorary Recognition Award at the annual convention of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), the highest honor bestowed by the organization. Hunter, the first African American elected president of NYSNA, was cited for her years of service to the nursing profession. She is a former chair of the association's first Committee on Human Rights and currently chairs the Political Action Committee.
