Claude E. Welch, Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor and director of the Program in International and Comparative Law in the Department of Political Science in the College of Arts and Letters, will speak at an international conference on contemporary Taiwan society being held this week in Taiwan. His keynote address is entitled "Civil Society and Human Rights NGOs." Sponsors include the Taiwan Democracy Foundation, part of the NGO Affairs Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Asia-Pacific Public Affairs Council; the Society of Wilderness; the Hsin Kang Foundation for Culture and Education, and Compassion International. While in Taiwan, Welch also will meet with UB alumni in Taipei and in Chia-Yi County, in the southern part of the island.

Kazimierz Braun, professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences, received the annual Turzanski Award in the area of culture from the W. and N. Turzanski Foundation based in Toronto. The Turzanski Award is considered to be the most prestigious Polish award in North America. Braun was recognized for "his distinguished achievements, both artistic and academic, in the area of theater, including his innovative approach to theater directing, his profound contemplation upon the place and function of theater in the contemporary world, his tremendous knowledge of theater art and his literary accomplishments" as the author of several novels, volumes of short stories and essays.

Robert J. Genco, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Oral Biology in the School of Dental Medicine, has won the 2003 Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the American Dental Association for his research into the relationship between periodontal and cardiovascular diseases. The Ross award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions in clinical investigations to advance the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of craniofacial-oral-dental diseases and other outstanding research accomplishments. Genco also is director of the Periodontal Disease Clinical Research Center in the dental school, as well as vice provost and director of UB's Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach. He has devoted an almost-40-year career to studying immunological principles that affect clinical dentistry.

Linda C. Duffy, associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the School of Public Health and Health Professions, has been appointed to the Clinical Research Review Committee for the National Center of Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. Duffy is one of 10 research experts from around the nation appointed to serve on the committee, which is responsible for the preliminary review of applications for support of the Clinical Research Program and for evaluating the research productivity of ongoing research centers.

Maria S. Horne, associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences who is internationally distinguished for her pedagogical skills and expertise in Ibero-American theater, received the Guarionex Award 2003 from the Hispanic Network of Western New York in recognition of her leadership contributions to the Hispanic community. The annual honoree is recognized for actively promoting community-welfare initiatives and unconditionally providing assistance in improving the economic and social conditions of Latinos in Western New York. A native of Argentina, Horne founded and directs the International Artistic and Cultural Exchange (IACE) program of the Center for Arts. The program brings unusually gifted theater and dance artists to UB from around the world and supports the performance of UB students at a variety of international theater festivals.
