Günter Schmitz, professor emeritus of architecture

Günter R. Schmitz, professor emeritus in the Department of Architecture in the School of Architecture and Planning, died in Germany on Friday. He was 71.

A native of Saarbrücken, Germany, Schmitz received his professional education in Germany and was employed by several architectural offices in the country.

After serving for six years as an assistant professor in the Department of Building at Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, he moved to the United States in 1967 to join the architecture faculty at Texas A&M University. He joined the UB architecture faculty in 1972, remaining on the faculty until his retirement in 1997. He served as chair of the Department of Architecture from 1973-82, and director of the department's Advanced Building Technology Graduate Program from 1982-89.

Colleagues in the School of Architecture and Planning remember Schmitz as a dedicated and gifted faculty member who played a major role in developing the architecture program in the School of Architecture and Planning—his pioneering work on modular construction and integrated design was influential in shaping the departmental curriculum.

The school, in honor of his intellectual contribution and educational innovations, and to recognize his commitment to students, plans to establish the Schmitz Scholarship to support students studying architecture at UB.

Anyone wishing to make a contribution to the Schmitz Scholarship Fund should contact the Dean's Office in the School of Architecture and Planning at 829-3485.
