Dennis R. Black, vice president for student affairs, received the 2004 Pillars of the Profession Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) at the association's national conference, held recently in Denver. NASPA, the premier professional association for student affairs administrators, cited Black's 25 years of experience in student affairs at UB, as well as his implementation of a "Students First" philosophy. The association also cited his role as editor of Perspective: The Campus Legal Monthly and his role as a faculty member in the James E. Scott National Academy for Leadership and Executive Effectiveness.

Myron A. "Mick" Thompson, associate provost and executive director of the Graduate School, has been elected as a member-at-large to the Executive Committee of the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS). NAGS is one of the four regional affiliates of the national Council of Graduate Schools (CGS). Thompson also recently was re-appointed to the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University. Located in Malm�, Sweden, the World Maritime University operates under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, and serves students from more than 140 countries and territories.

Charlynda Winkley, assistant director of Web services for enrollment and planning, was presented the "Digital Diva" award at the 2001 Beta Awards sponsored by InfoTech Niagara. This annual award recognizes a "woman with a combination of technology knowledge, commitment to the community and positive attitude who is a leader in the WNY region."

UB men's basketball head coach Reggie Witherspoon was named the Men's Division I Co-Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. He shares the award with Manhattan head coach Bobby Gonzalez. Witherspoon, who also was named the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Coach of the Year and Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, led the Bulls to a 17-12 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the MAC in 2003-04. The nine-win improvement in MAC play was the second-biggest turnaround in the history of the conference. In addition, the Bulls' 12-win improvement was the second-best turnaround among all Division I schools this past year.

Claude E. Welch, Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences, recently completed a term on the Academic Advisory Committee for Graduate Programs of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Welch also presented the keynote address and chief paper, "Democratization, Civil Society and Human Rights: Legacies, Challenges and Opportunities," at an international conference on contemporary Taiwan civil society sponsored by Nanhua University and various foundations in Yunclin Hsien, Chiayi Province, Taiwan. He also made a presentation on the strengths and weaknesses of the new international court established to try Sierra Leone war criminals during a conference on military coups and regional instability in West Africa sponsored by the Bureau of Intelligence and Research of the U.S. Department of State and the National Intelligence Council.
