MFC to hold summer computer workshops

Interested in building and repairing your own computer? Looking for a morning workshop for someone who is fairly new to using computers? Thinking of creating a Web page for your church group or sports team?

Millard Fillmore College will present a series of workshops this summer for adults with little or no computer experience.

The MFC Summer Computer Workshops are designed to help participants strengthen their basic computer skills, learn specific software applications and increase their knowledge of computer and Internet technologies.

The workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each day on the North and South campuses. The cost of each workshop is $149, plus materials. The schedule:

  • Building and Repairing Your Computer: July 12-16

  • Learning Windows and the Internet: July 19-23

  • Learning Microsoft Office: July 26-30

  • Creating a Web Site for Small Business or Nonprofit Organizations: Aug. 2-6

Participants who complete each workshop will be eligible for continuing education unit (CEU) credit from MFC.

PSS to hold conference on organizational skills

"Get It Together," a one-day conference designed to enhance participants' organizational skills, will be offered from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 11 in the Holiday Inn Grand Island, 100 Whitehaven Road.

The conference is being presented by the Professional Staff Senate.

Topics to be covered include finding a clean desk, organizing electronic files, understanding the principles of feng shui, time management and ergonomics.

The cost is $35 for UB faculty and staff and $45 for those not affiliated with the university, and includes continental breakfast, lunch and two refreshment breaks.

Indian concert to be held

Triveni, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the Indian classical performing arts in Western New York, will present a concert at UB on May 21.

The concert, featuring vocalist Bombay Jayashri, with H.N. Bhaskar on the violin and Poongulam Subramanian on the mridangam, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens.

EOC to hold graduation ceremony

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) will hold its 31st graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Buffalo Convention Center.

More than 500 graduates will be recognized as members of the EOC Class of 2004.

EOC provides educational job training, college preparation and related support services to economically disenfranchised and academically disadvantaged populations of Western New York. Thousands of individuals have received GEDs, entered college and secured employment through EOC.

Women in Philanthropy Seminar planned

The Division of University Advancement will sponsor a Women in Philanthropy Seminar to be held from 8:30-11 a.m. Tuesday in the Center for Tomorrow, North Campus.

The program will look at topics of critical importance to women involved in fund-raising efforts in higher education and throughout the nonprofit sector. Keynote speaker will be Sondra Shaw-Hardy, a nationally recognized authority on the women's philanthropy movement.

Advancing women's involvement in philanthropy has been a personal focus throughout Shaw-Hardy's 22-year career working in development, management, legislative office, adult education and public relations. President of the Women's Resource Center and co-chair of the Three Generations Circle of Women Givers in Traverse City, Mich., Shaw-Hardy teaches fund raising at Northwestern Michigan College, where she was a co-founder of a nonprofit certification program. In addition, she has served as an elected official and has extensive experience in fund raising in Michigan, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.

She is co-author of "Reinventing Fundraising: Realizing the Potential of Women's Philanthropy," and has written articles about women's giving that have appeared in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Journal of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives and New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising. Her research about women and philanthropy has been reported nationally in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Family Circle, Health and others.
