William E. Pelham, Jr., professor of psychology, pediatrics and psychiatry, and director of the Center for Children and Families, has been selected to be a mentor in the American Psychological Association / Institute of Education Sciences Postdoctoral Education Research Training program. APA/IES PERT is a new postdoctoral fellowship training program designed to increase scholarly research in the field of education through the application of psychological science to pre-K-12 education.

Jo L. Fruedenheim, professor and interim chair of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the School of Public Health and Health Professions, has been selected by the National Institutes of Health's Center for Scientific Review to serve as chairperson of the Epidemiology of Cancer Study Section for a term running from July 2004 through June 2006. Study section members are chosen based on the quality of their research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals and other scientific achievements and honors.

The Office of News Services won three awards in the recent SUNY/CUAD (Council for University Advancement and Development) competition. Buffalo Physician, the magazine of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, won "Best of Category" for alumni magazines. Contributors were editor Stephanie Unger, News Services, and designers David Riley, Alan Kegler and Karen Lichner, all of Creative Services. Writing by News Services' editors Lois Baker, John Della Contrada, Patricia Donovan and Ellen Goldbaum took the "Best of Category: News Stories-Research and Other Technical Writing." The National Media Program for UB Research, the newsletter for the Office of the Vice President for Research, won a "Judges' Citation." Recognized for contributions were Della Contrada, Baker, Donovan, Goldbaum and Christine Vidal.

Lynne Kurdziel-Formato, assistant professor and director of musical theatre in the Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences, received the Artvoice Artie Award for "Career Achievement" at the local weekly entertainment newspaper's annual awards ceremony last month.
