Register online for SEFA Day of Caring

Members of the UB community who wish to participate in the SEFA Day of Caring, to be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 18, should register at the SEFA Web site at http://sefa.buffalo.edu/2004 / by Aug. 6.

This year, all UB volunteers will be at Tifft Nature Preserve, performing a variety of activities and programs.

The day's program will begin at HSBC Arena, where there will be free parking available. Volunteers should arrive by 8 a.m. to check in and will be treated to a continental breakfast and a sendoff from city and county officials.

Since parking is limited at Tifft Nature Preserve, buses will take volunteers to the site and will return them to HSBC Arena where lunch and entertainment will be provided.

Cathy Hofher, wife of UB head football coach Jim Hofher, and the other UB football coaches' wives will help the uninitiated learn the basics of college football during "Football Uncomplicated," to be held from 5:30-9 p.m. Aug. 26 in UB Stadium, North Campus.

The event will raise money for Cornerstone Manor, a women and children's shelter associated with the City Mission.

The program will begin with a tailgate party and include an exclusive "behind-the-scenes" tour of UB Stadium. The basics of football, including a look at offense, defense, special teams and down and distance, will be discussed. Jim Hofher will be on hand for a question-and-answer session. A college official will explain penalties and fans will get a look at the equipment needed to play the game.

The cost of the program is $10, and will include a playbook, T-shirt, a certificate and tickets to a 2004 UB football game. There also will be prizes and raffles throughout the evening.

Space is limited. To register, call Dawn Reed at 645-6263. A brochure and registration form also can be downloaded at http://www.buffalobulls.com/events/fbuncomplicated.shtml.

Events sought for inclusion in celebration of presidential inauguration

With the investiture of John B. Simpson as UB's 14th president scheduled for Oct. 15, the month of October has been designated as a celebration of the presidential inauguration and will highlight outstanding academic programs to the university community, as well as to external communities.

Academic units are encouraged to participate by identifying scholarly activities of exceptional character and broader interest for inclusion in the inaugural celebration. Individual faculty members are welcome to nominate an activity in their departments for consideration by the Inauguration Events Subcommittee.

To be considered for inclusion in the official inauguration program, the activity should be a unique event of major importance, scheduled during October and open to the general public. The activity may be one that already is planned for October or one developed specifically for the inauguration. Activities of a cross-disciplinary nature are especially welcome. Activities might include endowed lectures, visiting speakers of national or international stature, conferences or symposia, performances, readings or exhibits.

The deadline for nominating activities is Aug. 5. The Inaugural Events Subcommittee will review the nominated events and respond by Aug. 16. The selection will be based on the nature of the activity, the academic units involved, interest to the broader community and timing and venue.

To nominate an academic event, email a brief description (no more than 100 words), including the name of the event, key participants and activities, sponsoring unit/faculty members, date, time and venue, to Katherine G. Ferguson, associate vice provost and director of enrollment marketing and communication services, at kgfergus@buffalo.edu.

For more information, or to discuss an activity for possible nomination, contact Stephen C. Dunnett, vice provost for international education and chair of the Inauguration Events Subcommittee, at 645-2368 or dunnett@buffalo.edu.
