Athletes of the Week

Cheick Diarra of the men's soccer team was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Army Classic. The junior defender was part of a defense that allowed two goals in three games during the week. In a 0-0 tie against Niagara, the Bulls' defense held the Purple Eagles to just one shot on goal. In the two games in the Army Classic, the UB defense limited the host Black Knights to six shots on goal in a 1-1 tie and Navy to seven shots in a 1-0 loss.

Nikki Morzenti of the women's volleyball team led the Bulls in kills in both matches at the Bison Scramble on Saturday, posting 16 against Bucknell and 19 against Stony Brook. A freshman hitter, Morzenti is putting together a solid freshman campaign for the Bulls with current averages of 2.84 kills per game (second on the team), 2.40 digs per game (fourth on the team) and 0.58 blocks per game. Her 19 kills against Stony Brook were just one away from her season high.

Football

Connecticut 38, UB 7

Connecticut tailback Terry Caulley rushed for a career-best 234 yards on 27 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead Connecticut past Buffalo, 38-7, in a non-conference game on Saturday in UB Stadium.

UConn racked up 613 yards of total offense-with 287 yards rushing and 326 yards passing.

With Connecticut up 17-0, the Bulls took advantage of a UConn miscue to score what turned out to be their only points of the game. Brandon Young fumbled a 38-yard punt by Dominic Milano with Dave Dawson recovering at the Husky 30-yard line. Redshirt freshman Steven King capped the drive with his second touchdown of the season from five yards out.

The Huskies rebounded, however, with an 80-yard drive on five plays.

After a Bulls drive stalled at their own 38, the most controversial play of the still-young season occurred. Young fumbled his second straight punt, with the ball rolling into the UConn endzone, where the Bulls fell on it. However, the officials ruled that an "inadvertent whistle" had stopped play and forced the Bulls to re-kick. A possible touchdown was lost and the Huskies used the momentum to score again to take a 31-7 lead to halftime.

Bulls' quarterback P.J. Piskorik made his first start at quarterback and rushed for a team-best 72 yards on 15 carries and completed 7-of-22 passes for 70 yards.

The Bulls will begin the Mid-American Conference slate on Saturday when they host Akron in UB Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Volleyball

UB 3, Bucknell 0
Stony Brook 3, UB 2

UB split two matches at the Bison Scramble, defeating Bucknell in three games (30-23, 30-20, 30-19) before falling to Stony Brook in five games (30-27, 20-30, 30-32, 30-24, 15-11). The Bulls participated in the Bison Scramble in place of the originally scheduled Maryland Eastern Shore Tournament, which was cancelled earlier in the week due to Hurricane Isabel.

The win over Bucknell was head coach Sally Kus' 900th career coaching victory. Kus compiled 794 wins in 23 years as the girls' varsity coach at Sweet Home High School, and she has 106 wins at the collegiate level in five-plus years-92 in four years at Daemen College and 14 thus far in her second year at UB.

Senior Lindsay Matikosh and sophomore setter Amy Brown both were named to the All-Tournament Team. Matikosh had 24 kills, 24 digs and seven service aces in the two matches, while Brown finished with 88 assists, 20 digs and five blocks.

The Bulls (5-7 overall) will open the 2003 MAC schedule this weekend with home matches against Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. tomorrow and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

UB 0, Niagara 0
UB 1, Army 1
Navy 1, UB 0

Two ties and a loss accounted for the men's soccer week, as the Bulls opened the week playing to a 0-0 draw with Niagara on Sept. 16 at RAC Field. Freshman Brandon Foley posted his first career shutout in net for UB.

The Bulls stormed out of the gate, outshooting the Purple Eagles by an 8-4 margin in the first half. Niagara responded however, winning the overall shots battle, 22-18, after outshooting UB 10-8 in the second half and 8-2 in the two periods of overtime play.

The Bulls registered more shots on goal however, firing three, while Foley was forced to make only one save.

In its opening contest at the Army Classic, UB tied the host Army Black Knights, 1-1. Freshman Andrae Clarke scored his team-high third goal of the season, while Foley made five saves and allowed only one goal in 110 minutes of action.

On Sunday, UB lost to the Navy Midshipmen, 1-0, to complete the weekend at the Army Classic. The loss-which ended a string of three consecutive ties for the Bulls-dropped UB to 1-4-3 on the season.

The game was scoreless until UB accidentally put the ball into its own net with eight minutes remaining. A backward pass from a Bulls' defender bounced over the head of Foley and into the open net.

The Bulls will return to action at home this weekend for a pair of weekend against Siena at 7 p.m. tomorrow, followed by a MAC clash with Akron at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The lead stood until the 68th minute when Cyndi Mullins scored for the Eagles to tie the contest, 1-1. The game remained tied through two overtime periods.

It was the first tie of the season for the Bulls, who are 5-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the MAC.
