University Facilities outlines campus projects

University Facilities currently has 183 projects of all types at various stages of planning, design or construction, including 83 active renovation projects under way. There are several capital construction and maintenance and repair projects under way as well. The following list highlights some of the major projects.

Completed Projects

  • The Farber Hall Infrastructure Project was completed this summer. Three 700-ton chillers were replaced at the South Campus, along with some piping for various building systems.

  • Seven air-handling units were replaced in Cooke and Hochstetter halls, North Campus. These new fan systems will provide a higher degree of reliability in these two buildings.

  • The rehab of various elevators on both campuses was completed during the spring. This project included upgrading, controls, hoistways and cabs.

  • A major renovation of Goodyear Hall, South Campus, was completed in August, which upgraded the heating and electrical systems. This work was completed on a very aggressive schedule, as work could not begin until students moved out in May and had to be completed by the time they returned in August.

  • Roadway resurfacing at various North Campus locations occurred this summer, along with the construction of a new parking lot at the Ellicott Complex. The new lot was an extension of the Richmond Lot that added 140 parking spaces.

  • A pedestrian access ramp for Crosby Hall, South Campus, was constructed this summer.

  • Renovations to public bathrooms were completed on the first and second floors of O'Brian Hall, North Campus.

On-going Projects:

  • The construction of the addition to Ketter Hall, North Campus is nearing completion. This project will expand the earthquake engineering research laboratory space in that facility and is scheduled for completion by Oct. 15. The earthquake simulator equipment will be installed and is scheduled to go on line in September, 2004.

  • The construction for the addition to Jacobs Hall, North Campus, for the School of Management has begun. Completion of construction is expected in January, 2005. The 34,000-square-foot addition, named the Alfiero Center, will contain offices, three lecture halls and public gathering space.

  • The replacement of the curtain wall for Allen Hall, South Campus, is in design. This project also includes renovation of the heating system.

  • An addition to Bissell Hall, North Campus, to enhance locker rooms and support spaces for University Police is under construction, with completion expected next spring.

  • Repairs to the steam tunnel on the South Campus are under way.

  • A major rehab is under way in Cary Hall, South Campus that will upgrade laboratories for the Center for Computational Biophysics. The first phase of this project is complete and work on the second phase has now begun.

  • The UB Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics in the Buffalo Life Sciences Complex near downtown Buffalo is under construction, with completion expected in Spring, 2006.

  • The project to renovate the historic Hayes Hall Bell Tower, South Campus, is under construction. Work is scheduled for completion next month.

  • The MacKay Heating Plant renovation began in May. The old coal-fired boilers have been removed and will be replaced with new, energy-efficient gas-fired boilers. Temporary gas-fired boilers will provide steam to the South Campus this winter.

  • An energy services company, ChevronTexaco Energy Services, has been selected to perform energy-conservation measures on the South Campus. A detailed energy audit is under way. The implementation phase is expected to begin this coming winter and spring.

  • A major renovation for the Center for Hearing and Deafness on the first floor of Cary Hall, South Campus is under construction. Completion is scheduled for next summer.

  • The Capen Lobby renovation for the Office of Enrollment and Planning is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 4.

  • A grounds aesthetic program is under way for the academic Spine on the North Campus.

  • A project has been initiated to retrofit standard outlets around lab sinks with GFCI outlets.

New Projects:

  • A major renovation of the steam-tunnel system under the South Campus is in design.

  • A comprehensive Americans with Disabilities Act study and survey has begun and is scheduled for completion this coming spring.

  • The project to replace the bleachers in Alumni Arena, North Campus, is in design. A major renovation in Alumni Arena is under way to construct offices for several administrative units in the Division of Athletics.
