Quilt project to benefit SEFA
Staff members in Student Academic Processing and the Student Response Center decided early in the summer to gather quilt squares from the community and put together a quilt for a raffle to benefit SEFA. Funds raised would go to the American Cancer Society, specifically for breast cancer research
Little did they know that the UB Pink Ribbon Quilt Project would take off and they would receive more than 400 quilt blocks from as near as on-campus to as far away as Minnesota. Once all the work is done, organizers say they will have completed three full-size quilts, at least four wall hangings, three pillows and a lap quilt.
Tickets are now on sale for an Oct. 31 raffle to feature the three quilts and the lap quilt. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
The quilters also are accepting bids for the wall hangings and the pillows. Photos, dimensions and bid information will appear soon on the Enrollment & Planning Web site at http://epic.buffalo.edu/Misc/SEFA/VPEP_SEFA.htm.
The nearly complete quilts and pillows will be displayed at the "Kneading the Dough" bake sale and baking contest being held on Oct. 24 in the Student Union Lobby.
The quilters also are raising money for SEFA by selling:
Inscriptions on some of the quilt squares. Anyone wishing to purchase one of these squares and have someone's name or a message printed on it may do so for a $10 donation.
Remembrance ribbons that will be added to one of the quilts. These pink ribbon insignias will feature the honoree's name embroidered on them. The cost is $1.
Two-inch-square, log cabin quilt blocks as pins or ornaments. The cost is 5.
Handcrafted remembrance angels that can be personalized. The cost is $5.
For more information or to purchase raffle tickets on the quilts, contact Mary-Camille Schwindler, 645-5707; Lisa Cino, 645-5753; Sylvia Jean Gondek, 645-5760; Lynn Bennett, 645-2450, or Kathy Saladayga, 645-5762.
Photo contest planned for SEFA
The Office of the Vice Provost for Enrollment and Planning is sponsoring a "50/50 Split Photo Contest" to benefit the SEFA campaign.
Participants may submit a digital photo (JPG file) for $1, or a print photo for $2. Photos are posted on the VPEP Web site http://epic.buffalo.edu/Misc/SEFA/VPEP_SEFA.htm for voting by members of the campus community. The winning photographer will receive half of the money collected, with the other half going to SEFA.
Entries are unlimited, although an entry fee is attached to each photo submission. The deadline for entries is Monday; totes will be tallied on Oct. 24.
Print entries should be sent to John Beltrami at 232 Capen Hall, North Campus. Digital photos may be entered into the contest directly from the VPEP SEFA Web site.
Ailey II to perform in CFA
The Center for the Arts will present the dance ensemble Ailey II at 8 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Mainstage theater in the CFA, North Campus.
The performance is sponsored by KeyBank. Media sponsors are WGRZ-TV Channel 2 and WJYE-FM.
Founded in 1974 by Alvin Ailey, Ailey II emphasizes a balance of repertoire, technique and performance spanning through all areas of dance. Ailey II is an exceptional company that merges the spirit and energy of the country's best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today's most outstanding emerging choreographers.
Ailey II began as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble when Alvin Ailey initiated a workshop composed of the most promising scholarship students from The Ailey School. The original members of the company were hand picked by Ailey from among that group.
Under the direction of Sylvia Waters, Ailey II invigorates the American dance scene by offering unique opportunities for artists. Company members, each of whom has completed advanced programs at The Ailey School, refine their technique while gaining invaluable performing and teaching experience during their tenure with the company, which is usually two years. Throughout its history, more than 50 Ailey II members have been selected to join the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Many others have gone on to pursue successful careers as dancers, teachers and choreographers with other professional dance companies, on Broadway and in schools.
Ticket holders for this performance are invited to attend a pre-performance talk to be led by Troy Powell, resident choreographer for Ailey II. The talk will begin at 7 p.m. in the Screening Room in the CFA.
Tickets for Ailey II are $22, $18 and $16, with UB students receiving a $6 discount. Exclusive discount coupons are available at all KeyBank locations.
Tickets are available at the CFA box office from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and at all Ticketmaster locations.
