New Faculty Faces
Name: René Bobe
School: College of Arts and Sciences
Department:
Anthropology
Academic Title: Assistant Professor
Academic Degrees: B.A.,
Pomona College, Claremont, Calif.; Ph.D., University of Washington,
Seattle
Areas of Special Interest: Biological anthropology, human
evolution, mammalian evolution<
Although my research involves detailed
analysis of small fossils, I take a global perspective in the study of
human evolution. In my research, I seek to understand evolutionary
processes over large geographical areas and over time intervals measured
in geological scales.
Name: Denise Cote-Arsenault
School: Nursing
Academic Title: Associate
Professor
Academic Degrees: B.S. and M.S., nursing, Syracuse University;
Ph.D., University of Rochester; Postdoctoral fellowship, University of
Washington
Areas of Special Interest: Pregnancy, pregnancy after
perinatal loss, breastfeeding/lactation, focus groups in research
One of
my current projects involves a longitudinal study of 81 women who are
pregnant after perinatal loss. What are their emotions? Do they see
pregnancy as a threat? How do they cope?
Name: David Forliti
School: Engineering and Applied Sciences
Department:
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Academic Title: Assistant Professor
Academic Degrees:B.S. and Ph.D., University of Minnesota; M.S., Florida
State University
Areas of Special Interest: Fluid mechanics, combustion,
experimental methods, stability of fluid flows
My primary focus right
now involves the control and enhancement of combustion systems using
methods that alter turbulence. The objective is to improve
combustion-system performance in the context of efficiency, emissions
and stability.
Name: Alexander Hurd
School: College of Arts and Sciences
Department:
Music
Academic Title: Assistant Professor
Academic Degrees: B.A., B.M.,
Oberlin College; M.M., University of Cincinnati
Areas of Special
Interest: American art song
I'm preparing for a recital on Feb. 17 in
Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, and am busy working on two operas for
this coming semester. I still need help decorating my office. It's not
pretty!
Name: Donald E. Mager
School: Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Department: Pharmaceutical Sciences
Academic Title: Assistant Professor
Academic Degrees: B.S., Pharm.D. and Ph.D., UB
Areas of Special
Interest: Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic systems analysis of
immunomodulatory, anti-platelet and anti-cancer drugs
The National
Institutes of Health has expressed a critical need for the development
of novel approaches for predicting the pharmacokinetics,
pharmacodynamics and toxicological profiles of new chemical entities in
humans prior to clinical testing. I currently am developing new methods
of integrating molecular properties and physiological parameters to
predict the in vivo disposition and dynamics of chemically related
entities.
Name: Kathryn Medler
School: College of Arts and Sciences
Department:
Biological Sciences
Academic Title: Assistant Professor
Academic
Degrees: B.S., biology, Texas A&M University; M.S., physiology, San
Diego State University; Ph.D., zoology, Louisiana State University
Areas
of Special Interest: Regulation of signal transduction pathways in
chemical sensory cells
I am currently characterizing the expression of
calcium buffering mechanisms in taste cells. In taste cells, calcium is
the final messenger that causes a signal that is sent to the brain, but
it is not known how calcium levels are regulated within the taste cell.
Name: Aiming Yu
School: Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Department:
Pharmaceutical Sciences
Academic Title: Assistant Professor
Academic
Degrees: B.S., Normal University of Central China, Wuhan, China; Ph.D.,
Nankai University, Tianjin, China
Areas of Special Interest:
Pharmacogenetics, drug metabolism and disposition
UB's excellent
research facilities and reputation attracted me to come to the
university.
