"Sonic virtuosity" is theme of 2005 June in Buffalo

NEW YORK NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE

June in Buffalo, a festival and conference dedicated to composers that is presented annually by the Department of Music, will take place Monday through June 11 at locations on the North Campus.

An extraordinary opportunity for student composers to work with professional musicians and a distinguished faculty, June in Buffalo offers an intensive schedule of seminars, lectures, master classes, panel discussions and open rehearsals, as well as afternoon workshop/performances and evening concerts that are open to the general public and critics.

SLEE SINFONIETTA

Each of the invited composers can have one piece read or performed during an afternoon workshop presentation. The composers receive a recording for future study and demonstration purposes.

ENSEMBLE SURPLUS

Performances feature resident ensembles and soloists renowned internationally as interpreters of contemporary music.

Serving as resident composers this year are Simon Bainbridge; David Felder, Birge-Cary Chair and coordinator of composition in the Department of Music and artistic director of June in Buffalo; Brian Ferneyhough; Alvin Lucier; Philippe Manoury; and Christopher Rouse. Resident ensembles are Ensemble SurPlus, New York New Music Ensemble, Quatuor Diotima and the Slee Sinfonietta, UB's resident professional chamber orchestra.

A closing reception will be held in the lobby of Slee Hall following the final concert on June 11.

  • 4 p.m., Lippes Concert Hall, chamber music featuring the works of various June in Buffalo participants
