Teaching provides a chance to step away
from the often insular world of research and consider the broad and
indispensable issues of historical enquiry. I find much greater value
in the study of history when I can convey it to students, who, in the
main, will not become professional historians, but ought to become
thoughtful, educated citizens.

I am currently
working on an article on forms of female bondage within a
military-aristocratic elite in northwestern India between the 17th and
19th centuries. I am also embarking on a larger project about regional
historical memory and the emergence of the modern discipline of history
in northwestern India in the modern period.
