Emmitt Lyons, former EOP director
Emmitt "Derby" Lyons Sr., a former director of the Educational Opportunity Program, died on June 7 in his home in New Carrolton, Md., after a long illness. He was 61.
A native of Durham, N.C., Lyons earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in psychology from North Carolina Central University.
In 1967, he joined the faculty of the psychology department at Hampton University, where he also served as director of the Office of Psychological Student Services.
He joined the UB staff in 1971 as director of the EOP, and earned a doctorate in educational administration from UB in 1973. He left UB that year to join the faculty of the psychology department at the University of the District of Columbia, where he taught until illness forced him to retire in 2004.
