Shake, Rattle and Roll

Visitors attending the grand opening on Friday of the George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Facility in Ketter Hall witnessed the effects of a moderate earthquake during a demonstration of the new shake tables that are the centerpiece of the facility. The shake tables shook the "room" in two directions. In the first, seismic dampers protected the room from damage. No dampers were in place to protect the room when it was shaken in the second direction, resulting in damage. NEES is located within the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
