Athletes of the Week

James Evans of the football team had a career game against Miami (OH) with eight solo tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, two pass breakups and a sack.

Jenny Dannecker of the women's soccer team scored a hat trick and added an assist in UB's 5-2 win over Toledo on Friday. Dannecker, a senior forward, leads the Bulls with six goals, including two game-winners, and six assists.

Football

Miami (OH) 25, UB 7

Miami University's Josh Betts threw for 306 yards and the RedHawks rebounded from a halftime deficit to defeat Buffalo, 25-7, in a Mid-American Conference battle on Saturday in UB Stadium.

The RedHawks used a 12-point fourth quarter to pull away after UB had a chance to retake the lead early in the fourth quarter. The Bulls (1-6, 1-4 MAC) missed a pair of field goals in the game and Miami converted on 10-of-17 third down conversions to make the difference in a very competitive game.

The Bulls used an opportunistic defense and some key plays to take a 7-6 lead to intermission. Tailback Steven King scored his team-leading sixth touchdown from one yard out. It was the third straight week King has found paydirt.

The score stayed that way at the half when cornerback James Evans made one of his several huge plays in the game. The freshman got the first sack of his career and forced his second fumble of the season, which led to a 22-yard loss after Miami had moved to the UB 20-yard line. Junior safety Sherwan Saaty broke up a fourth down pass to end the drive.

Miami retook the lead midway through the third quarter when Betts hit Ryne Robinson on a three-yard pass to cap an 11-play, 64-yard drive. The RedHawks added a touchdown, field goal and safety to make the final score less reflective of the overall competitiveness of the game.

P.J. Piskorik went the whole way at quarterback for the Bulls after being reinstated from suspension this week. He completed 10-of-19 passes for 98 yards with an interception.

Volleyball

Marshall 3, UB 1

Central Michigan 3, UB 0

UB dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting Marshall Thundering Herd on Oct. 14, 27-30, 30-22, 30-24, 30-22.

The Bulls hit .317 in game one, led by seven kills from sophomore Nikki Morzenti, and held on for a 30-27 win to take an early lead in the match. The Thundering Herd, however, rebounded to win three straight games behind the hitting of freshman Kelly-Anne Billingy.

On Friday, the Bulls dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Central Michigan, 30-21, 31-29, 30-25. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 7-14 overall and 0-8 in the MAC.

The Bulls will be on the road for their next four matches, beginning tomorrow at Ohio.

Soccer

MEN'S

Cleveland State 1, UB 0

Northern Illinois 3, UB 0

A second-half goal by Cleveland State's David Stewart helped the Vikings top the Bulls, 1-0, in a non-conference match at Lost Nation Park on Friday. Stewart's goal came in the game's 54th minute. Although the Bulls outshot Cleveland State, 16-11, they couldn't put the ball past Vikings' goalie Amir Kettani, who made seven saves to earn the shutout.

On Sunday, the Bulls could not overcome the 37 mph winds or their recent scoring woes as they were shut out by the Northern Illinois Huskies, 3-0, at RAC Field. The Huskies got on the board early with a goal in the 16th minute and added another goal three minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Northern Illinois tacked on its final goal of the game during the 65th minute of play.

After scoring 17 goals in their first seven games, the Bulls have managed just three goals in their last seven games. The loss puts the Bulls at 7-6-1 for the year and 1-3-0 in the MAC.

They will be back in action on Sunday at Marshall. The Bulls will return to their home field home for their final regular season game against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29.

WOMEN'S

UB 5, Toledo 2

Bowling Green 1, UB 0

Senior forward Jenny Dannecker scored three goals as UB picked up a huge MAC win against the University of Toledo on Friday night at RAC Field.

The win snapped a six-game winless streak for the Bulls (4-10-1 overall, 3-5-1 MAC), who lost five of six games on a three-week road trip leading into Friday's game.

Dannecker opened the scoring in the 17th minute as senior goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert punted a ball past the defense and Dannecker beat the Toledo goalie for the score. Twenty-three minutes later, sophomore Jessica Roesch scored her first career goal, with an assist from senior Lindsay Szafranski.

Dannecker added her second tally with 1:34 left in the first half and added her third tally in the 80th minute. She also scored an assist on a goal by junior Erica Mincher in the second half.

On Sunday, Bowling Green's Kristy Coppes scored in the fourth minute to lift the Falcons to a 1-0 MAC triumph over the Bulls on a blustery afternoon that included wind gusts up to 37 mph.

The loss puts UB's chances of making the MAC playoffs in limbo. The Bulls (4-11-1 overall, 3-6-1 MAC) will have to earn at least four points—a win and a tie—in its final two league games this weekend at home to have a chance at qualifying.

The Bulls will host last-place Marshall at 7 p.m. tomorrow and first-place Ohio at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
