Luis A. Colon, professor in the Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, recently was inducted into the Hispanic Scholarship Fund's Alumni Hall of Fame. The HSF is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. Since its founding in 1975, it has provided more than 73,000 scholarships to Latino students totaling $170 million. Other inductees to the Hall of Fame include Richard Carmona, U.S. surgeon general (2002), U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales (2003) and Federico Peña, who served as secretary of energy and secretary of transportation in the Clinton Administration (2005).
Alexis De Veaux, associate professor and chair of the Department of Women's Studies, has received the $10,000 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for nonfiction for her book, "Warrior Poet," a biography of feminist poet Audre Lorde. The award from the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation honors outstanding books by writers of African descent.
Russ Crispell, coordinator of the Outdoor Pursuits Program and head men's tennis coach, has been re-elected president of the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education.
Madhavan P. Nair, professor of medicine and microbiology, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been invited to serve as a member of the NeuroAIDS and Other End-Organ Diseases Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health. Study sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on the applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board and survey the status of research in their fields of science.
UB has received a Lifetime Platinum Membership in the Network in Aging of Western New York Inc. for its continued support of the Network in Aging. Michael Noe, interim chair, Department of Rehabilitation Science, School of Public Health and Health Professions, accepted the membership at the 25th annual meeting of the Network in Aging, held yesterday in the Millennium Airport Hotel in Cheektowaga. The Network in Aging Inc. is a voluntary, non-profit organization that brings together individuals and organizations in Western New York who are involved in aging and long-term care. Its offices are located in Kimball Tower, South Campus.
