SofTrek joins with bioinformatics center

SofTrek Corporation, an Amherst-based, Oracle hosting-and-technology company, has formalized membership in the Corporate Partner Program of UB's New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences.

SofTrek's Oracle hosting service, appitat, can provide infrastructure and expertise to support the technology required by the burgeoning life sciences and biomedical organizations in the Buffalo Niagara region, where the Center of Excellence is conducting translational research and supporting technology commercialization and new business development. SofTrek's appitat service affords companies an economical, low-risk approach to acquiring and implementing the Oracle Life Sciences platform.

"Partnerships with leading, local technology companies like SofTrek are an integral part of the mission of the Center of Excellence and we are pleased that SofTrek appreciated the opportunity in life sciences and decided to join our efforts," said Marnie LaVigne, director of business development at the Center of Excellence.

"Many life sciences start-up companies want the robust benefits of the Oracle platform, but have budget or expertise constraints. We're pleased that a local company like SofTrek was able to come up with an affordable approach to offering the Oracle platform that can benefit other companies in the region," LaVigne added.

UB to commemorate Fillmore's birthday

The 206th anniversary of the birth of Millard Fillmore, UB's first chancellor and 13th president of the United States, will be observed during a ceremony to be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

David L. Dunn, vice president for health sciences, will deliver the memorial address at the annual observance honoring Fillmore, who played a major role in the founding of numerous cultural, civic and community organizations in Erie County.

Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served in the Forest Lawn Chapel.

Born on Jan. 7, 1800, Fillmore was instrumental in founding the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, the Buffalo Club and The Buffalo General Hospital.

His activities also led to the creation of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy and the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences.

Some historians credit the former teacher, postmaster, lawyer and member of Congress with establishing the White House Library.
