MEN'S

UB 56, Delaware State 51

UB erased a 17-point second-half deficit to defeat Delaware State, 56-51, in Memorial Hall on Friday night. The Bulls closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with their eighth straight win and improved to 10-1 on the campaign.

Delaware State jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the game and looked as if it was going to run away with the contest. The Hornets played stingy defense early to force nine first-half turnovers and hold the Bulls to a season-low 19 first-half points. Delaware State held a 33-19 lead at the half.

The Hornets extended their lead to 36-19 on a three-pointer by Darrin Shine with 19:01 left in the game. Delaware State held a 49-38 advantage with 8:24 remaining before the Bulls mounted their comeback.

Sparked and capped by Roderick Middleton three-pointers, the Bulls rattled off 13 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game, 51-49, with 4:12 remaining. A Jahsha Bluntt jumper tied the contest on the Hornets' next possession, but that was the last time Delaware State scored. Yassin Idbihi hit a runner in the lane to give the Bulls a 53-51 lead, and UB sealed the victory with free throws in the closing seconds.

Middleton led UB with 15 points, 13 of which were scored in the second half. Calvin Cage notched 14 points and Parnell Smith chipped in 10 points. Middleton and Idbihi shared team rebounding honors with six boards apiece.

WOMEN'S

Bucknell 74, UB 63
UB 73, Texas-San Antonio 62
Tulsa 64, UB 39

Bucknell relied on career scoring nights from two players as the Bison defeated the Bulls, 74-63, on Dec. 28 in Alumni Arena. The Bison used a 17-3 run in the first half and another run of 13-3 in the second half to win their sixth game of the season.

The Bulls led by as much as seven in the first half, but Jacquie Seawright and Amanda Brown took control of the game on their way to career nights with 22 and 20 points, respectively.

UB got a tremendous effort from sophomore Heather Turner, who recorded her third double-double of the season with a new career-high 25 points, and a game-high 12 rebounds. Turner kept the Bulls in the game, and UB did go on a 14-0 run at the end of the first half and into the second, but Bucknell answered with its 13-3 run.

Freshman Jamie Schiebner tied her career high with 12 points in the contest, while senior Brooke Meunier recorded eight points and pulled down 10 boards.

The Bulls then traveled to San Antonio for pair of contests at the UTSA Wells Fargo Classic. UB tied its season-high for points in a half (47) en route to a 73-62 come-from-behind victory against the host Texas San-Antonio Roadrunners in the first round Friday night.

For a second straight game, the Bulls got a huge performance from Turner who scored a game-high 23 points, including an 11-of-16 performance from the line. Turner scored 19 of her points after the intermission, including all her free throws.

Schiebner recorded her second double-double of the season, with a career-high 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She was the leading scorer for the Bulls in the first half, as they went to the locker room down, 33-26. This was the first time this season the Bulls won a game when trailing at the half.

The Bulls can credit their comeback to an 11-0 run to start the second half, which began on a jumper by Belinda Gibb, who had her best offensive game of the season, chipping in 11 points for UB. The Bulls finished the game on an 18-8 run during the final six minutes of the contest.

On Saturday, the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes used an 18-0 run during the closing minutes of the first half and into the second half to defeat the Bulls, 64-39, in the final day of the classic. The loss drops the Bulls to 5-6 on the season as they enter Mid-American Conference play this weekend.

The Bulls weren't able to contain the hot-shooting Golden Hurricanes, who had three players in double figures, including a game-high 21-point performance from Megan Moody.

UB was led by Schiebner, who dropped in eight points in the contest. Meunier added seven points for the Bulls, all in the first half. Turner, who had six points and pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds, was named to the all-tournament team.

The Bulls shot a season-low 30.2 percent from the field, including just 23.8 percent from behind the arc. UB, which hit 24-of-33 foul shots in the first game of the tournament, hit just 2-of-7 from the charity stripe.

UB will begin conference play on Saturday, traveling to Miami (OH) to face the RedHawks.

Wrestling

Bulls win six weight classes to dominate UB Open

Senior Kyle Cerminara did everything within his power to break John Stutzman's (1996-97) record of 24 straight victories before 2006 ran in, but he was only able to tie the record while picking up his record third UB Open championship at the third annual event, held on Friday in Alumni Arena.

Five other Bulls also claimed championships and in all, 16 UB wrestlers placed at the event, with at least one placing in all 10 weight classes to cap off the successful day.

Cerminara, who has won 32 matches in a row dating back to his Niagara and UB Open championships while redshirting in 2004, has wrestled only 24 matches against NCAA opponents this season, making his official record 24-0, despite wrestling 26 matches this season. Matches against junior-college athletes do not count on an NCAA wrestler's won-loss record.

The 197-pounder easily wrapped up his third UB Open title by pinning Nassau Community College's Joe Scioli, ranked seventh in the latest junior college poll, in 51 seconds. In the semifinals, he had a 10-3 lead on Mount Union's Chris Hart before Hart left the match with an injury. In his first round match, he beat Edinboro's Pat Bradshaw, 7-2.

Junior Mark Budd won his second straight UB Open title at 133 pounds and third tournament of the year as he beat Maryland's Steven Bell, wrestling unattached, 5-3, earning a sudden-victory takedown to clinch the win. Budd also beat two junior-college wrestlers during the tournament.

Senior Garrett Hicks posted a perfect 4-0 mark in the five-man 184 pound weight class to also win his second straight title. Hicks posted two pins and a technical fall en route to the title, clinching first place with a 14-3 major decision against freshman Ricky Scott, who went 2-2 wrestling unattached to place third.

Junior Pat Lloyd also picked up his second UB Open title at 149 pounds, as he downed Edinboro's Joe Backmore, 13-5, in the finals. Lloyd won a thrilling 5-4 decision in the semifinals against Mount Union's Sean Connelly, coming back from a 4-2 deficit by earning a takedown with 12 seconds left to tie the score, then gaining a riding-time point as time expired. He also posted a pin of Slippery Rock's Chuck Wiltrout in the first round.

Senior Harold Sherrell (heavyweight) and sophomore Mickey Moran (165 pounds) each picked up their first UB Open titles. Sherrell posted a perfect 4-0 mark at heavyweight when he earned the title after teammate Greg Thomas, wrestling unattached, defaulted the championship match after winning his first three matches. Sherrell posted a 17-0 technical fall in the first round against Niagara Community College's Colin Thompson before earning a 5-2 decision against Slippery Rock's Matthew Buschalder and a 5-1 decision against Nebraska's Stefan Tighe, wrestling unattached. It's Sherrell's third title of the year, and improves his season record to 22-4.

Moran beat three junior-college wrestlers, including a 6-1 decision against Nassau Community College's Mike Vingo, ranked first in the nation, in the finals. He posted two falls and also had a 6-2 decision against Michigan's Dario Mainella in the semifinals.

UB opens its MAC slate tomorrow with a meet at Northern Illinois, ranked 22nd by USA Today/NWCA/InterMat.
