UB's best opportunities for achieving international prominence by 2020 in the area of information and computing technology are clustered in computational science, information science and human-computer interaction, according to the draft white paper on the strategic strength in information and computing technology. » Full Story
Working under the influence. Workplace alcohol use and impairment directly affects an estimated 15 percent of the U.S. workforce, according to a recent study conducted at UB's Research Institute on Addictions.
Aviation security. New research by cognitive psychologists at UB explores the cognitive processes that underlie screening at airport security checkpoints.
Moving suicide into public realm. A UB media study student has produced a unique performance piece and video blog that invites visitors to download dozens of ritual performances related ot the suicide of his brother.
UB to offer B.S. in informatics. In response to industry demand, the School of Informatics will offer a bachelor's degree in informatics, beginning in fall 2006, to provide undergraduates with training in both information technology and interpersonal skills.
Pediatric MS center established. The Jacobs Neurological Institute at UB has received a $1.8 million, five-year grant from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to establish at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo one of six Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Centers of Excellence the society is creating in the United States.
Colón inducted into hall of fame. Chemist Luis Colón has been inducted into the Hispanic Scholarship Fund's Hall of Fame in recognition of his scientific accomplishments and his mentoring work with students.
Developing rules for RNA. UB chemist Matthew Disney is working to find compounds that bind to and inhibit an RNA sequence as a potential approach to designing disease treatments.
Baseball score. Music theorist Timothy Johnson got to rub elbows with luminaries in the world of baseball when he was recognized for his book examining the influence of the national pastime on the work of composer Charles Ives.
