The second annual Celebration of Academic Excellence—a university-wide celebration of scholarly, research and creative excellence—will be held April 20 in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

The celebration incorporates some of the traditional elements of UB's former annual convocation—in particular recognizing the university's outstanding faculty and staff—while placing a special focus on undergraduate student excellence in research, scholarship and creative activities.

In particular, the celebration will include an exhibition and recognition of undergraduate student projects across the disciplines, as well as artistic performances by undergraduate students.

Poster presentations by undergraduate student investigators will be on display in the Center for the Arts atrium. Students were chosen to present projects based on input from all of the deans, who were asked to identify and select a number of outstanding undergraduate research and creative projects from their respective areas. In addition, other groups that typically showcase undergraduate student projects also were asked to select and submit exceptional presentations.

Provost Satish K. Tripathi noted that the past year has been one of considerable achievement for UB, and the Celebration of Academic Excellence provides the perfect setting to reflect upon that achievement.

"This event will bring together the UB community to affirm our commitment to academic excellence and recognize the student and faculty accomplishments and achievements of the past year," Tripathi said.

As UB continues to move forward with the UB 2020 strategic planning process, the Celebration of Academic Excellence "affirms the outstanding scholarly and creative achievements that, today, are evident across the academic disciplines and throughout our entire university." he added.

Those attending the celebration may view the student poster presentations from 1:30-3 p.m. Exhibitions by student artists also will be on display during that time in the ground-floor and first-floor galleries in the Center for the Arts.

A musical performance will begin at 3 p.m. in the Mainstage theater featuring pianist Richard J. English, B.F.A. '07, and tenor Evan S. McCormack, B.F.A. '06.

The formal celebration ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. with remarks by President John B. Simpson. Selections from the musical "Merrily We Roll Along" will be performed by students in the Department of Theatre and Dance. In addition, Sarah K. Campbell, Ph.D., '07, will perform "Sound Poetry."

The event will recognize UB's newly named SUNY Distinguished Professors, the recipients of the Chancellor's Awards for Excellence, the new UB Distinguished Professors and the recipients of the Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Awards and the Undergraduate Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creativity.

Philip G. Miles, professor emeritus in the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, will receive a pin recognizing 50 years of service to the university.

A reception will follow the ceremony.

Members of the university community wishing to attend the Celebration of Excellence should R.S.V.P. online at www.ubevents. org/event/celebrate06 by April 14. More details about the event are posted at http://celebrate.buffalo. edu/.
