Donald W. Rowe, public health liaison, School of Public Health and Health Professions, has been reappointed to the New York State Rural Health Council Board of Directors.
Mark Green, grid computational scientist and head of cyberinfrastructure at the Center for Computational Research, has been named to the executive board of Open Science Grid. The OSG is a nationwide community grid built by research groups from U.S. universities and national laboratories that enables collaborative research through distributed computing technologies.
Scott Williams, professor of mathematics, was keynote speaker at the fourth annual Benjamin Banneker Awards of Excellence in Math and Science ceremony. Twelve minority students from the Buffalo Public Schools received the awards, which are named for Banneker, an 18th-century mathematician and astronomer and the son of a freed American slave. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Banneker to survey and plan Washington, D.C.
A selection of paintings and silk-screened prints by artist James Pappas, associate professor in the Department of African-American Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, is on display in the String Room Gallery at Wells College through April 21.
D. Bruce Johnstone, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor of Higher and Comparative Education, Graduate School of Education, will receive the Celebration of Life Award from Gilda's Club Western New York at the club's Celebration of Life Luncheon on May 16. The Celebration of Life Award is presented to an extraordinary person living with cancer, or who lived with cancer, whose life has been an inspiration to others through his or her strength of character, conviction and fortitude.
Larry Gingrich, associate dean of Millard Fillmore College, has been named to a three-year term as commissioner on Futures and Markets Commission of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA). Founded in 1915 and based in Washington, D.C., UCEA provides national leadership in support of policies that advance workforce and professional development.
Martin E. Mutka, director of the Library Consortium of Health Institutions in Buffalo, is being honored by Buffalo Business First as a finalist in their recognition of "Health Care 50." The 2006 finalists, to be highlighted in the April 7 issue of Business First, were chosen for their achievements in medicine, research, finance and other health-related industries. Mutka has served as consortium director for the past 10 years, overseeing the operations of the Hospitals and University at Buffalo Library Resources Network (HUBNET).
