Sept. 19 has been designated as a "special day of learning" at UB, and regular classes will be suspended to allow students and faculty to participate in learning opportunities centered on His Holiness' Distinguished Speakers Series address, titled "Promoting Peace Across Borders Through Education."

While a number of events already have been planned for Sept. 19, among them art exhibits, a book fair, a film screening, a workshop on nonviolent conflict resolution and a lecture by a Tibetan monk, members of the university community are encouraged to "propose additional academic activities that might be suitable for this unique occasion and enhance the learning experience of those who participate," says Satish K. Tripathi, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

"These activities should broadly relate to the theme of His Holiness' visit and might address global issues that are not only of particular interest to students and community members, but also of abiding concern to the Dalai Lama himself," Tripathi says. Among possible topics he cites are defense of human rights; stewardship of the environment; the threat of terrorism; the plight of exiles, refugees and "stateless" persons; the role of education in promoting peace; and the relationship between science and spirituality.

Proposals for special activities on Sept. 19 may be submitted to the Dalai Lama Steering Committee via John J. Wood, associate vice provost for international education and a member of the committee, at jjwood@buffalo.edu.

Beginning May 8, employee ticket sales for the Dalai Lama's public lecture on Sept. 19—pre-lecture program to begin at 1 p.m.—can be purchased at the Dalai Lama Web site at http://www.buffalo.edu/dalai_lama.

UB employees will be required to provide their last name and the eight-digit person number that appears on their UB ID card to purchase tickets.

Those interested in purchasing 20 or more tickets should call Sonia Marinaccio in the Office of Special Events at 645-6147, ext 227, beginning May 8.

Ticket prices will range from $15 to $40.

Tickets for students have been pre-allocated and will be made available to matriculated students at the start of the fall semester.

Beginning May 22, persons registered as patrons via the Dalai Lama Web site will have access to a special online ticket purchase site. The link to register—at no charge—as a patron for event is available at http://www.buffalo.edu/dalai_lama). Any remaining tickets will be made available to the public beginning May 30.

Ticket patrons also will have an opportunity to purchase reserved seats for a performance of "Sacred Music Sacred Dance" with the famed Multiphonic Singers of the Drepung Loseling Monastery. A matinee program is planned for 3 p.m. Sept. 17.

Orders will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis; the next-best-seat(s)-available method will be used to fill the ticket orders; orders will be mailed beginning in mid-June.

A faculty/staff hard-copy ticket order form will be made available at the Alumni Arena box office, or as a downloadable PDF form on the Dalai Lama Web site, beginning at 9 a.m. May 8.

The Sept. 19 Distinguished Speakers Series address will be part of a historic three-day visit to Buffalo by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who will receive a SUNY honorary doctorate in humane letters prior to the lecture.

In addition to that lecture, the Dalai Lama will participate in a number of activities, including an interfaith service in Alumni Arena on Sept. 18, a special meeting with select UB students and faculty, and an international conference focusing on Tibetan and Buddhist law, entitled "Law, Buddhism and Social Change."
