In the consolation game against Niagara, UB posted a tournament record and tied a school record for runs while setting the school record for hits and doubles in its 27-12 pummeling of the Purple Eagles. The victory gave Bulls head coach Bill Breene his 100th career win.

Freshman Jacob Rosenbeck became the fourth player in school history to get five hits in a game, as he finished 5-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and four RBIs. Freshman Eric Flynn went 2-for-4-was hit by a pitch twice and reached base on an error-to tie a school-record with five runs scored.

The Bulls (11-27 overall) as a team tied the school record for runs in a game, tying a mark set on April 28, 2002 in a 27-12 win against Ohio, and crushed the Big 4 Tournament record of 12 set by St. Bonaventure in the title game in 2005 and tied by Canisius in its 12-4 win against the Bulls on April 25. They also set the school record for hits in a game, smashing 29 and passing the mark of 24 set three times, and doubles in a game with 10. The team also tied the school mark for total bases in a game with 45, also set against Ohio.

Four errors and three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning helped Akron score five runs and a 7-5 come-from-behind win against UB in Mid-American Conference play at Lee Jackson Baseball Field on Friday afternoon.

A day after his 14-game hitting streak was snapped, freshman Brad Agustin started a new one, driving in five runs as the Bulls came from behind to steal away a 7-6 win from Akron on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, Akron's Kurt Davidson scored on a balk with two outs in the 10th inning to lead the Zips to a 9-8, 10-inning win in the rubber match.

UB ended a five-game skid with a doubleheader split against St. Bonaventure on April 27, winning 3-1 in the first game and falling in the second contest 5-4 in the seventh inning.

On Saturday, Kent State's Brittany Robinson showed why she's the top pitcher in the MAC, striking out 11 UB batters en route to an 11-1 victory at Kent State Field.

UB scored its one run in the top of the fourth inning after it was down by six. Marcy Hansen began the inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on a single by Erin Zilka. Hansen scored when freshman Ashley Kanavy hit into a fielder's choice. The RBI was the first of Kanavy's career.

Robinson continued where she left off on Sunday, striking out 14 Buffalo batters as Kent State completed the two-game sweep with an 8-0 victory. The loss dropped the Bulls to 12-39 on the year and 2-14 in conference play.

Robinson was able to retire 14 Bulls via the strikeout-all but four outs in the game were from Robinson strikeouts. Hansen was the only UB batter to hit during the series, going 2-for-4 on Saturday and 2-for-3 on Sunday.

Tennis

MEN'S

Northern Illinois 4, UB 0

UB was eliminated 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Championships by Northern Illinois, ending the season for the Bulls and preventing UB from reaching the semifinal round for the third straight season. UB, which entered the tournament as the fourth seed, ended the 2005-06 campaign with a record of 11-9.

The Bulls picked up a doubles win, but were unable to claim the opening point. UB's number-two team of Nikesh Singh and Matt Kennedy knocked off NIU's David Katz and Jimmy Chu, 8-4.

The loss concludes Russ Crispell's tenure as head coach. Crispell is 123-114 in 13 years with the men's program.

WOMEN'S

UB 4, Bowling Green 2
UB 4, Miami (OH) 1
Western Michigan 4, UB 0

Heading into the 2006 MAC Championships, UB had never won a tournament match-let alone reached the finals-but the Bulls put together a run that placed the team in the championship match after convincing wins in the first two rounds.

In the quarterfinals, the second-seeded Bulls disposed of Bowling Green, 4-2. UB then moved into the championship match following a 4-1 win over Miami (OH) in the semifinals. But the clock struck midnight for the Bulls on Sunday as a stronger Western Michigan team took its sixth MAC title and first since 2000 with a 4-0 decision over the Bulls.

The Bulls finished 2005-06 with a 16-5 overall record, the most wins in school history.

It also was a week filled with honors and accolades for the Bulls. Prior to the tournament, Kristen Ortman was named the league's Player of the Week for her 3-0 mark in the final weekend of the regular season. Andreea Novaceanu and Miglena Nenova were named to the All-MAC First Team and head coach Kathy Twist was selected the league's Coach of the Year by her peers. Novaceanu and Nenova also were named to the all-tournament team.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team scored a photo-finish victory in its race. The Bulls foursome of Bryan Weinstein, Reggie Rucker, James Graber and Roy Richards finished in 41.281, inching out the Michigan State squad by just six-thousandths of a second (41.287).

The squads will return to action Saturday at Akron's Campbell/Wright Open.

Bashor named new head coach

Athletics director Warde Manuel has named Andy Bashor as the next head coach of the UB women's swimming program, effective immediately. Bashor, who brings 10 years of coaching experience to UB, becomes the 11th head coach in the history of the university's women's swimming program.

Bashor comes to UB from Rutgers University where he spent the past four seasons as the head assistant swim coach for both the men's and women's programs. Bashor, who coached the sprinters and was the recruiting coordinator, helped lead the Scarlet Knights' women's swim team to one of its most successful campaigns this past season, finishing second in the Big East Conference and qualifying seven swimmers for the Women's NCAA Championships. Rutgers ranked 13th in the final CSCAA women's swimming rankings this past season.

Bashor had a successful career as a collegiate swimmer at North Carolina State University. Specializing in sprint free and butterfly, he was a team captain during his senior season. He received a bachelor's degree in biological studies in 1996.
