Athletes of the Week

James Kingsley of the baseball team became the second player in UB history to record 200 hits in a career as he batted .316 (6-for-19) in five games during the week. Kingsley went 4-for-7 with seven RBIs in UB's split at LeMoyne. He also homered in the LeMoyne contest to become the second UB player to reach 25 career homers. Kingsley is the only UB player to get 200 hits, score 100 times, drive in 100 and hit 25 homers in a career.

Mary Russell of the women's softball team batted .476 (10-for-21) in UB's seven games last week. Russell hit the game-winning walk-off home run in UB's 6-5 victory over Miami (OH) on Saturday. She scored seven runs and was 2-for-2 on her stolen base attempts for the week. Against Syracuse, she was 6-for-6 and finished the season with a .293 batting average and four home runs.

A landmark day that featured senior James Kingsley's 200th career hit and senior Sean McWilliams' school-record-breaking seventh career save helped UB to a split of red-hot LeMoyne, dropping the first game 5-3 before winning the nightcap, 6-3, at Dick Rockwell Field on May 3.

LeMoyne came from behind to win the first game, despite three RBIs from Kingsley.

The Bulls got on the board in the first inning when senior Carl Aquila was hit by a breaking ball to the helmet with two outs. Kingsley followed with a fly ball to deep right field that sent the right fielder crashing off the wall. He dropped the ball and Aquila scored.

With LeMoyne leading 4-1, Kingsley kept the Bulls in the game after Agustin walked. With one out, he hit his 25th career home run over the right-center field fence.

The Dolphins added a run to make it 5-3 in the sixth to round out the scoring in the first game.

In the second game, McWilliams got out of a self-imposed, bases-loaded, two-out, seventh-inning jam when he got a groundball to second base for his record-breaking seventh save to preserve a 6-3 win for the Bulls and snap a 10-game LeMoyne winning streak.

The Bulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when freshman Brad Agustin singled to right field with one out. Aquila followed with a single that hit the second-base bag and shot over the shortstop's head into center field, setting up Kingsley, who delivered a three-run homer to right-center field.

UB continued scoring in the second inning when freshman Eric Flynn reached base on a one-out drag-bunt single. Agustin walked and after a flyout, two wild pitches helped score Flynn and allowed Agustin to reach third. Kingsley swatted a single just under the third baseman's glove for his seventh RBI of the game, giving UB a 5-0 lead.

The large lead was short-lived, however, as Phil St. Amant delivered a solo shot to start the LeMoyne second inning. St. Amant cut deeper into the lead in the third inning with an RBI single.

Agustin answered back for the Bulls, hitting his seventh homer of the season to make it 6-2.

St. Amant once again cut into the UB lead when he hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 6-3. On the next pitch, Matt Nandin blasted a pitch to the short power alley in left center and Flynn made a beautiful running catch before hitting the fence to keep it a three-run game, where it ended.

The Bulls returned to the Mid-American Conference schedule on Friday, taking part in two very different games in their doubleheader against Miami at McKie Field. The first game—a 2-1 Miami victory—was a true pitchers' duel. The nightcap, however, was a 12-3 RedHawk victory, including a seven-run third inning.

In the opening game, all three runs scored within the first two innings of the contest. The pitchers then took control and didn't allow a single runner to cross the plate.

The nightcap was all Miami as the RedHawks put together a seven-run third inning to take a commanding lead it never gave up.

In the series finale on Saturday, Miami used a strong pitching performance from John Ely to complete the sweep of UB with a 12-0 victory.

The Bulls will return to action at 3 p.m. tomorrow when they begin a three-game series with Bowling Green at Amherst Audubon Field.

Four wins in its final seven games highlighted the last week of the softball season for the Bulls. UB finished the 2006 campaign over the weekend with home games at Nan Harvey Field, splitting a doubleheader with Ball State and sweeping Miami (OH) in dramatic fashion.

On May 2, the Bulls used a team effort from their pitching staff to combine for a 4-3 victory over the visiting Niagara Purple Eagles.

The Purple Eagles got off to a quick start in the first inning, scoring a run on a home run by Jennifer Yee.

The Bulls took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Marcy Hansen led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Mary Russell. Hansen tied the gamed when she scored on a single by Erin Zilka. With runners on the corners, Niagara tried to pick off the UB base runners. But a throwing error by the shortstop allowed both runners to cross the plate.

Niagara got closer in the top of the second scoring an unearned run after a throwing error by the UB catcher. The Bulls regained the three-run advantage in the second inning. Senior Lauren Picciano hit a one-out triple to right center and later was driven in on a bunt single by Hansen.

Jennifer Biernacki started the game for the Bulls, pitching two innings and being credited with a no-decision. Biernacki gave up two runs in the contest, but just one was earned. Margo Schramm pitched two innings as well, recording her first collegiate win while allowing just one run in the contest and striking out two Niagara batters. Sophie Barstad pitched the final three innings of scoreless relief, earning her first career save. Barstad struck out six Purple Eagles, including the side in the seventh inning. In fact, Barstad allowed no hits, while facing the minimum nine batters.

On May 3, UB pounded out 10 hits in the series opener, but dropped a pair of contests to Syracuse, 10-5 and 10-1, at Syracuse Softball Stadium.

The Orange got out to a 4-0 lead in the first game of the doubleheader, but the Bulls took the lead with a five-run rally, with two outs, in the top of the fourth inning.

However, Syracuse scored six unanswered runs—three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth—to take the victory.

The second game remained scoreless until the Bulls recorded a run in the third. The lead was brief, however, as Syracuse scored 10 unanswered runs-four in the third inning and six in the fourth. The game ended after UB's at-bat in the fifth inning.

The Bulls closed the season with four home games. UB split a doubleheader on Friday with Ball State, winning the first game, 2-1, but falling in the nightcap, 10-1.

The Cardinals took the early lead in game one, using the long ball for a 1-0 lead. However, the Bulls tied the game with a Zilka home run to left center field.

UB took the lead in the fifth. Picciano reached base after she was hit by a pitch. Her pinch runner was thrown out while attempting to steal third, but Russell, who had reached base on an error, moved up to second. Russell advanced to third on a ground out by Hansen and then scored when Laura Kor reached base on a fielding error.

In the nightcap, the Bulls got on the board early, scoring a run in the first inning. Ball State got back into the game in the second with a home run by Abby Gross. Gross broke the tie in the fourth inning, hitting her second home run of the contest. Ball State added three more runs in the inning off a bases-clearing double.

The Cardinals broke the game wide open in the sixth inning when Amanda Pick hit a grand slam to fuel a five-run inning.

On Saturday, the Bulls picked up a dramatic come-from-behind 6-5 victory, scoring two runs in the seventh on back-to-back home runs by juniors Colleen Greene and Russell to defeat Miami (OH).

UB completed its sweep of Miami, scoring a 6-0 victory on a two-hit shutout by Sophie Barstad.

The 2006 Bulls finished the season breaking a few team records. The squad ranks first in at-bats (1,444), hits (332), doubles (54), home runs (21), walks (123), putouts (1,083), assists (502) and innings pitched (361).

Barstad set the team record for wins (13) and innings pitched (218.2), while Hansen set the school record for at-bats in a season (171).

Bulls prep for MAC Championships at Campbell/Wright Open

UB sent a limited contingent of athletes to Akron's Campbell/Wright Open on Saturday as the Bulls prepared for this weekend's MAC Championships. There was no team scoring at the event.

UB posted one winner in the competition-junior Paul Riley, who won the men's 800-meter run in a season-best mark of 1:53.79. The UB record holder in the event, Riley sliced more than three seconds from his previous best time of 1:56.64 set at the Bucknell Bison Open.

Varsity 4 wins UB's first Metro Championship title

Having never finished in the top four at the ECAC Metro Rowing Championship, UB placed second out of 13 crews on Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The Bulls scored 58 points on the day, including UB's first-ever title at the meet, the Varsity Four, catapulting UB to its first medaling performance at the conference championships in school history.

On the afternoon, UB finished second to Massachusetts, who prevailed in the field of 13 schools with a combined score of 70. Rounding out the top five were Rhode Island in third place with 53 points, Boston College in fourth with 52, and Colgate in fifth with 49.

The Bulls next will compete at the Dad Vail Regatta tomorrow and Saturday in Philadelphia.
