UB won one game in a three-game series against Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green over the weekend.

In the first game on Friday at Amherst Audubon Field, Bowling Green banged out 15 hits to upend UB, 12-3. UB managed only four hits on the day—two from senior Carl Aquila, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and two from sophomore catcher Rick Oliveri, who also went 2-for-4.

On Saturday, despite ninth-inning leadoff singles from freshman Brad Agustin and senior David Amaro, UB couldn't drive in the runs as Bowling Green pitcher Tyler Johnson settled down to save the 6-4 win for the Falcons in a game that was delayed two hours by rain.

In the last game of the series on Sunday, seven unanswered runs from the third to fifth innings, a four-run performance from freshman Brad Agustin and three runs from Oliveri helped lift UB to a 11-8 win. The Bulls pounded out 15 hits on the day.

UB will finish the season this weekend with a three-game series against Kent State at Amherst Audubon Field. Games are set for 3 p.m. today and 1 p.m. both tomorrow and Saturday.

Outdoor Track and Field

Higgins, Heim win MAC titles on final day

Two UB athletes won titles during the MAC Championships last weekend at the University of Toledo.

Junior Brian Heim took his second men's 400-meter-hurdles title in three seasons with a school-record time, while junior Rayshon Higgins claimed the first MAC title of his career in the men's triple jump.

In the team standings, the UB men finished seventh with 54 points in the seven-team event, while the UB women placed 12th with 25 points among the 12 squads. Central Michigan won the men's team title with 176.50 points and Akron claimed the women's title with 141 points.

Heim broke his own school record in winning the hurdles crown on Saturday, turning in a time of 51.75 to lower his school record by two-tenths of a second. He had won the 2004 title in 51.95 to set the school record and then tied the time earlier this season at the Miami (OH) Invitational.

Higgins, meanwhile, soared to an easy victory in the men's triple jump with a distance of 48-10.25 (14.89m) to win the event by more than 15 inches. Higgins posted the top two jumps of the competition, clearing his winning distance on his second attempt of the afternoon. He only attempted one additional jump before passing on his final two attempts and claiming the crown. Junior teammate Roy Richards finished sixth in the event with a season-best mark of 45-10.50 (13.98m). Richards also finished sixth in Friday's long jump competition.

Heim and Richards also were part of UB's second-place finish in the men's 4x100-meter relay. UB broke the school record in the event for the second time this season. The foursome of Bryan Weinstein, Reggie Rucker, Heim and Richards completed the lap around track in 40.99, bettering the previous record of 41.06 set on April 22 at the Northeast Ohio Invite. The UB foursome took second place by just two-hundredths of a second over third-place Akron (41.01). Central Michigan won the title in 40.64. Weinstein also finished eighth in the men's 200-meters in 21.99.

UB racers had a pair of third-place finishes in the 800-meter run. Junior Paul Riley finished in 1:54.12 in the men's competition, while junior Kate Kohout turned in a 2:10.89 in the women's race, just missing her personal best by one-hundredth of a second.

In the distance races, senior Jenny Koeppel placed sixth in the women's 5,000-meters in 17:04.95 and fifth in the women's 10,000-meters with a time of 36:27.40. Freshman Mary Veith turned in a seventh-place finish in the women's 1,500-meter run in 4:36.59. Sophomore Dan Giza was 10th in the men's race in 4:02.13.

UB's women's relay teams set season-bests in both races. The 4x100-meter-relay foursome of Dana Ventrone, Stacy Downer, Shauna Curry and Fatimah Hill finished 11th in 48.86 to set a season-best mark. Downer, Kohout, Veith and Curry formed the 4x400-meter relay that turned in a 3:54.19 clocking to finish 10th.

Heim and Higgins earned All-MAC first-team honors for their victories. Weinstein, Rucker and Richards picked up second-team honors for the relay. Women's javelin thrower Vanessa Roelofsen earned a second-team mention with her second-place finish in the women's javelin on May 11.

Second varsity eight claims top prize At Dad Vail

After qualifying for three final events on Friday, UB continued its stellar success entering the final day of the Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday in Philadelphia. The second varsity eight defeated 22 other crews to take home the top prize—the first in school history—while the varsity eight crossed the finish line two seconds behind St. Joseph's to earn the bronze medal.

The second varsity eight boat never looked back at the annual regatta, placing first in both the quarterfinal and semifinal heats, as well as the finals, taking the gold medal in a time of 6:43.58. Last season, the boat finished fifth in a time of 7:20.04.

In the final event of the regatta, the varsity eight boat captured its best finish by taking third out of 39 crews. After placing 22nd one season ago, the eight boat finished in a time of 6:42.14. It led the first 1,500 meters of the race before trailing behind St. Joseph's and the University of Massachusetts.

The final UB boat to qualify for the finals was the lightweight four boat, which came up with a last-place finish in the finals of six crews. Its time of 7:51.40 was 20 seconds short of top-seeded Villanova, which finished in 7:32.07.
