Center of Excellence to hold open house

Members of the UB community and the general public will have an opportunity to get a glimpse of the future of medicine on Sunday as UB's New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences holds a free open house from 1-4 p.m.

The $52 million center is located at Ellicott and Virginia streets on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, only a short distance from Allentown and its annual arts festival to be held this weekend.

During the open house, visitors will learn first-hand about cutting-edge research aimed at improving the understanding of disease and developing new drugs and treatments, as well plans to commercialize those outcomes to benefit the local economy and create jobs.

Light refreshments will be served.

The New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, a major research center of UB, works in close collaboration with research partners Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute.

Indian vocalist to perform

Classical Indian vocalist M. Balamuralikrishna will perform at 7:30 p.m. June 16 in the Student Union Theatre, North Campus.

The performance is sponsored by Triveni, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of Indian classical music and dance in Western New York.

Considered by many to be the reigning "musical monarch" of Carnatic music—the classical music of Southern India—Balamuralikrishna has received the Padmavibhushan, the pre-eminent award from the government of India. He also has received the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France's highest honors.

Tickets, which may be purchased at the door, are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors.

Kahn is next author in WBFO series

Author Ashley Kahn will read from his book, "The House that Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records," at 7 p.m. June 19 in Musicalfare Theatre, located on the Daemen College campus in Snyder.

The reading is part of the Meet the Author series presented by WBFO 88.7 FM, UB's National Public Radio affiliate.

Bert Gambini, executive producer of Meet the Author, will serve as host of the event, which will be free and open to the public. The reading will be broadcast live on WBFO. A book signing will take place immediately following the reading and light refreshments will be served.

Following the path of its star musician, legendary saxophonist John Coltrane, Impulse Records cut a creative swath through the 1960s and 1970s with the politically charged, avant-garde jazz that defined the label's musical and spiritual identity. "The House That Trane Built" tells the story of the label, balancing tales of individual passion, artistic vision and commercial motivation. Weaving together research, dynamic album covers, session photographs and nearly 100 interviews with executives, journalists, producers and musicians—from Ray Charles and Alice Coltrane to Quincy Jones, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner and others—Kahn presents a riveting tale of an era-shaping jazz label in the age of rock.
