Head men's basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon will serve as a court coach for the 2006 USA Basketball Under-18 National Team Trials, being held tomorrow through Sunday in San Antonio. Witherspoon was selected for the position by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, which is chaired by Jim Boeheim, head men's basketball coach at Syracuse University. Following the selection of the finalists for the U.S. squad, the American team will train Monday through June 27 in San Antonio for the qualifying tournament, to be held June 28 through July 2, for the 2007 FIBA U-19 World Championships.

Gary Earl Ross, professor in the writing program at the Educational Opportunity Center, won the Edgar Allan Poe Award (The "Edgar") from the Mystery Writers of America for best play of 2005. The play, a courtroom thriller entitled "Matter of Intent," premiered in Buffalo last year.

Elizabeth Otto, assistant professor of art history, served as curator of an exhibition of work by German artist Marianne Brandt currently on view at the International Center of Photography in New York City.

Linda Brodsky, professor of otolaryngology and pediatrics, and director of the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo, received the 2006 Alumnae Achievement Award from Drexel University College of Medicine.

Richard M. Peer, clinical associate professor of surgery, has been elected president of the Medical Society of the State of New York.

Edward A. Stehlik Sr., a Buffalo internist and associate clinical professor of medicine, assumed office earlier this spring as governor of the New York Upstate Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of doctors of internal medicine.

Buffalo attorney Patrick C. O'Reilly, a member of the adjunct faculty of the Law School, has been named chairman of the New York State Bar Association's Family Law Section.
