Football

Rutgers 17, UB 3

UB outgained Rutgers in total yardage, but couldn't find the end zone and dropped a hard-fought contest to the Scarlet Knights, 17-3, in front of 17,640 fans on Saturday night in UB Stadium.

The Bulls, who struggled to get their offense going in the first two weeks of the season, racked up a season-high 349 yards on 85 plays against Rutgers. A stingy Bulls defense held the Scarlet Knights to 288 yards of total offense—their lowest output this season.

After trailing 7-0 at halftime, the Bulls finally got on the scoreboard on their first drive of the second half. After a 55-yard drive, Mike Baker connected on a 33-yard field goal to cut the Rutgers advantage to 7-3 with 6:53 left in the third quarter. However, Rutgers scored 10 unanswered points to take a 17-3 advantage late in the third quarter.

The Bulls threatened to score in the fourth quarter, twice moving the ball into Rutgers' territory. However, they were unable to add any more points to the scoreboard and dropped their third straight game of the season.

After a week off, UB will travel to Kalamazoo, to face Western Michigan on Oct. 1.

Volleyball

UB 3, Niagara 1

UB dropped a 30-28 decision in game one, but came back to sweep the next three games en route to a 3-1 win (28-30, 30-25, 30-23, 30-23) over the visiting Niagara Purple Eagles on Sept. 13 in Alumni Arena. The Bulls had four players in double digits in kills, including three with double-doubles in kills and digs.

In the opening match of the West Virginia Classic in Morgantown on Friday, Amy Brown, Jenna Map and Nikki Morzenti each recorded their second straight double-double, but their individual performances were spoiled in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the host Mountaineers. WVU pulled out the five-game win by scores of 30-26, 25-30, 30-22, 22-30 and 15-11.

The Bulls concluded play in the WVA tournament on Saturday with identical, 3-1, wins over Memphis (30-28, 30-15, 21-30, 30-23) and Duquesne (30-28, 19-30, 39-37, 30-24) to place second at the tournament and improve to 7-5 overall on the season. MEN'S

UB 3, St. Bonaventure 1
UB 7, Centenary 0
UB 3, Western Illinois 0

After starting the season with four victories in UB Stadium, the men's soccer team hit the road and continued its winning ways, picking up three victories, including a pair of shutouts in the Georgia Southern Kick-Off Classic over the weekend.

Before heading to Georgia, UB knocked off local rival St. Bonaventure, 3-1, on Sept. 14. Andrae Clarke opened the scoring at the 9:24 mark and was followed a minute later as Brian Knapp knocked in a goal to give the Bulls a 2-0 edge. After a St. Bonaventure goal closed the gap to 2-1, Greg Galemore picked up the final goal of the afternoon in the second half.

The weekend trip to Statesboro, Ga., netted the Bulls a pair of shutout wins. UB trounced Centenary, 7-0, behind Lee Catchpole's two goals. Knapp, Clarke, Shyle Braithwaite, Marc Stencel, Sola Abolaji and Braden Byler all tallied once in the victory.

The Bulls closed out the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Western Illinois. Braithwaite, Matt Stuczynski and Catchpole scored for the Bulls. Braithwaite, Catchpole, goalkeeper Dan Bell and Mbwana Johnson earned All-Tournament honors.

WOMEN'S

Niagara 1, UB 0

Despite outshooting Niagara in each half and forcing Purple Eagle's keeper to make 14 saves, UB fell, 1-0, Friday night. Niagara's Brittany Bisnott scored on a breakaway in the 86th minute to spoil the Bull's first game in UB Stadium.

Bisnott, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's leading scorer, sent the rain-soaked crowd of 346 home disappointed as she stole the ball on a UB pass and broke away. She was caught from behind at the 10-yard line by a Bull's defender, but after the defender blocked the shot, she got entangled with the goalkeeper, allowing Bisnott to grab the rebound, and put it in the center of the net.

Niagara (5-1-1 overall) was on the defensive for most of the game, especially in the first half, as UB (2-4-1 overall) took eight shots, forcing goalkeeper Katy Owings to make seven saves.

UB hopes to start its MAC season with a win, as it opens tomorrow at 7 p.m. in UB Stadium against rival Miami (OH)
