David R. Pendergast, professor of physiology and biophysics, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has received the Albert R. Behnke Award, the most prominent honor awarded by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). Pendergast received the award, presented in recognition of outstanding scientific contributions to advances in the undersea or hyperbaric biomedical field, at the annual scientific meeting of the UHMS, held in late June in Orlando. The UHMS is the primary source of information for diving and hyperbaric medicine physiology worldwide.

Stanley Zionts, UB Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Alumni Professor Emeritus of Decision Support Systems, School of Management, received an honorary doctor of science degree from the Helsinki School of Economics, the largest business school in Finland. The title of honorary doctor is awarded to distinguished individuals who have shown outstanding achievement in the field of science, economics or society.

Gregory S. Cherr, assistant professor of surgery, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been selected to receive the prestigious Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Award from the American Geriatrics Society. The Jahnigen award program provides two-year grants of $200,000, including an institutional match, to assist young faculty members in initiating and ultimately sustaining a career in research and education in the geriatrics aspects of his/her discipline. Cherr's research proposal is entitled "Determinants of Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease."

WBFO 88.7 FM, UB's National Public Radio affiliate, received two awards in the New York State Broadcasters Association's 41st Annual Award for Excellence in Broadcasting Competition. Award recipients were Joyce Kryszak, news and cultural affairs producer, who won for "Best Feature" for a story on holiday celebrations at Compass House, a home for troubled teens in Buffalo, and listener commentator Gary Earl Ross, who won for "Best Commentary, Editorial or Documentary" for the "Orwell Awards," which he presents annually to those who embody the hypocrisy depicted in George Orwell's "Animal Farm" and "1984."

The television broadcasts of the Center for the Arts' "Music is Art LIVE @ The Center," a free weekly series featuring cutting-edge musicians and visual artists performing and working in a coffeehouse atmosphere, have received a Bronze Telly Award for Lighting Design. The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions. Among this year's award winners are BET Jazz, CNN, Disneyland Resorts, FX Networks, GEICO, HGTV, Marshall Field's, Microsoft, MSNBC, NBA Entertainment, NBC Universal Global Network, Nickelodeon, Nike, QVC and The History Channel.

Timothy J. Klein, B.S. '84, has been named 2006 Engineer of the Year by the UB Engineering Alumni Association in recognition of his success as president, CEO and co-founder of ATTO Technology Inc., an Amherst-based computer electronics company.
