David Sedaris to speak in CFA

Best-selling author and essayist David Sedaris will speak at 8 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Mainstage theater in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

A book signing will follow the presentation.

Sedaris may well be the closest thing the literary world has these days to a rock star—his speaking engagements are consistently standing-room-only, a far cry from his early days as a housecleaner in New York City. Sedaris' sardonic humor and incisive social critique have made him one of National Public Radio's most popular and humorous commentators.

In addition to his commentaries on NPR's "Morning Edition," Sedaris is the author of the bestsellers "Barrel Fever" and Holidays on Ice," as well as "Naked" and "Me Talk Pretty One Day," a collection of personal essays that also became a national bestseller.

Collaborating with his sister, Amy Sedaris, under the name "The Talent Family," Sedaris has written several plays that have been produced at La Mama, Lincoln Center and the Drama Department in New York City. These include "Stump the Host;" "Stitches;" "One Woman Shoe," which received an Obie Award; "Incident at Cobbler's Knob;" and "The Book of Liz," which was published in book form by Dramatist's Play Service.

His essays appear regularly in Esquire and The New Yorker.

He was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word Album ("Dress Your Family in Corduroy & Denim") and Best Comedy Album ("David Sedaris: Live at Carnegie Hall") in 2005.

In 2001, Sedaris was named by TIME magazine as Humorist of the Year, and became the third recipient of the Thurber Prize for American Humor.

Tickets for David Sedaris are $29 and may be purchased at the CFA box office from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and at all Ticketmaster locations.

Bulls to play Penn State in 2007

The UB football team has signed an agreement to play at Penn State in 2007.

The game will be played in historic Beaver Stadium on Sept. 15, with the time to be announced at a later date.

It will mark only the second meeting between the schools, the first going back to 1900, which the Bulls won, 10-0, in Buffalo. This will be the Bulls' first ever trip to "Happy Valley," and the 107,282-seat Beaver Stadium will be the largest facility in which a UB football team has ever played. Penn State, the defending Orange Bowl champion, is coming off an 11-1 season in 2005.

"We are excited about the opportunity to go and play a revered program such as Penn State," said Warde Manuel, director of athletics. "We feel that the exposure and experience that we will gain by playing Penn State will be invaluable. It's also geographically a great opportunity for Buffalo fans to see a tremendous college football atmosphere and venue."

Head coach Turner Gill said the game will provide "a great opportunity for UB football to gain more recognition throughout the state of Pennsylvania. We are extremely excited to further our growth as a Division 1-A football program versus an established program such as Penn State." The 2006 UB football season will kick off on Aug. 31 when the Bulls host Temple in UB Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Tickets for the 2006 season can be purchased online at tickets.com or by calling 1-888-223-6000.
