Volunteers needed for Dalai Lama events

Volunteers are needed to assist with the visit to UB next month by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Event organizers are looking for more than 240 volunteers to serve in a variety of roles at the Interfaith Service on Sept. 18 in Alumni Arena and at the Distinguished Speakers Series lecture by the Dalai Lama on Sept. 19 in UB Stadium. Volunteers will be permitted to view the event and will receive a volunteer T-shirt.

Volunteers must be available to attend one training session. The sessions will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. Sept. 10, 2:30-2 p.m. Sept. 11 or 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 12.

The Wreckers to perform in CFA

The musical duo The Wreckers, featuring Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp, will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Mainstage theater in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

The Wreckers is the first duo since Brooks & Dunn to break into the top five with a debut release. "Leave The Pieces," from the debut album "Stand Still Look Pretty," has been outpacing all other current singles from debut artists since it first hit the airwaves in April.

The group performs modern country music at its best. From the first single, the assertive and exuberant "Leave The Pieces," to the down-home hoot, "Crazy People," "Stand Still Look Pretty" hits the highest standards of both country and pop, with more than a little rock and roll tossed in for that extra bite.

Since the release of "Stand Still Look Pretty," the duo has been opening for Rascal Flatts, music's top-selling artist of the year, as part of the Me & My Gang Tour. This fall, the singers will perform with Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson and Montgomery Gentry.

They also have garnered a great deal of media attention, with appearances on "Late Show with David Letterman," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," "The View," CBS's "The Early Show," the "2006 CMT Music Awards" and the "41st Annual Academy of Country Music Awards."

Tickets for The Wreckers are $20 for the general public and $15 for students. Tickets will be available, beginning tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the CFA box office and at all Ticketmaster locations, including Ticketmaster.com.
