Construction Update

University Facilities currently has 195 projects of all types at various stages of planning, design or construction, including 92 renovation projects under way. There are several capital construction, and maintenance and repair projects under way as well. The following list highlights some of the major projects.

Completed Projects

  • Installation of new synthetic turf in UB Stadium was completed this summer.

  • Construction of the Alfiero Center, an addition to Jacobs Management Center, was completed this spring. The center contains offices, three lecture halls and public gathering space.

  • Repairs of damages caused by a fire in O'Brian Hall last March were completed this spring and summer.

  • A number of rehabs were completed in Hayes and Crosby halls this summer for the School of Architecture and Planning.

  • The Goodyear Hall dining room renovation project was completed this summer.

  • Repair of the skylight in the Katharine Cornell Theatre was completed this summer.

  • Diefendorf 146 was painted and received new seating, carpeting, acoustic treatments and E-Tech upgrades. E-Tech upgrades and aesthetic improvements also were completed in Clemens 204; Baldy 105, 107 and 111; and Fillmore 325 and 354.

  • A capital-funded paving project was completed this summer on selected roadways and parking lots on both North and South campuses.

  • A number of new infrastructure renewal projects to upgrade/replace building systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing and masonry were completed.

  • The Ellicott Complex tennis courts were repaired this summer.

  • Painting of public spaces on both campuses, including crossover bridges, fire hydrants, interior lobbies and hallways, was completed this summer.

On-going Projects

  • A project to relocate the fiber-optic network from the South Campus steam tunnels is under way, with completion expected during Spring 2006.

  • The design and bidding for the replacement of the curtain wall for Allen Hall are completed. This project also includes renovation of the heating system. Construction is expected to begin this fall or in the spring.

  • UB's New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences complex at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus is under construction, with completion and occupancy expected this winter or in Spring 2006.

  • Chevron Texaco Energy Services has been selected to perform energy-conservation measures on the South Campus. The implementation phase is expected to begin this fall.

  • A major renovation of the steam tunnel system under the South Campus is nearing the end of the design process. The first phase of construction is scheduled for Spring 2006.

  • A project to upgrade the primary electrical service to the South Campus is under construction, with completion scheduled for Summer 2006.

  • Renovation of the fifth floor of O'Brian Hall that would renew space for programs and activities for the UB Law School is in design. The project is scheduled for construction this fall and Winter 2006.

  • The state Department of Transportation and the City of Buffalo project to reconstruct Main Street between Bailey and Hertel avenues is continuing through the fall. Improvements include revisions to the Kenmore Avenue-Main Street intersection, new entrances to the Main/Bailey and NFTA parking lots, timed traffic lights during rush hour and safer pedestrian crossings.

  • A feasibility study to investigate storm water and sanitary sewer issues on the South Campus is under way.

  • Repair of the exterior wall of O'Brian Hall is under way and is expected to be completed this fall.

  • The design to repair the Hayes Hall cornice is nearing completion, with construction scheduled for Summer 2006.

  • A capital project for new air-handling units in the Millard Fillmore Academic Center in the Ellicott Complex is in design.

  • New field lighting is being installed in the old stadium, with completion scheduled for this fall.

New Projects

  • Renovation of Acheson Hall for the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is in design.

  • Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades on the North and South campuses are in design.

  • Masonry restoration and window/panel caulking project is in design for Kimball Tower.

  • Construction of a new library storage facility is expected to begin this fall.

  • A number of new infrastructure renewal projects are being planned to upgrade/replace building systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing and masonry.
