Football

Western Michigan 31, UB 21

UB opened its Mid-American Conference schedule on Saturday night and couldn't overcome a fast Western Michigan start in a 31-21 loss to the Broncos before 14,198 fans in Waldo Stadium.

Trailing 24-0 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulls rallied for three touchdowns. Quarterback Drew Willy connected with Chad Upshaw and Derrick Dyer on passes and Jared Patterson scored on a one-yard run.

The Bulls' second half performance on offense was their best of the season, and was punctuated by the play of Willy. For the game, the true freshman connected on 30-of-38 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. His 30 completions were second best in school history and the most by a UB player in its Division I-A history (1999-present).

The Bulls will host Akron on Saturday for Homecoming. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.

Volleyball

Akron 3, UB 2
Ball State 3, UB 1

A career day by junior Nikki Morzenti and a gutsy comeback by the UB volleyball team was spoiled when the Akron Zips pulled out a 15-12 win in game five to take a 3-2 decision from the Bulls in MAC action on Sept. 29 at Akron.

The Zips took games one and two, 31-29 and 30-22, before the Bulls forced a fifth game with a 30-22 win in game three and a dramatic 35-33 victory in game four. Morzenti led the Bulls with a career-high 30 digs. She also recorded her 800th career kill and was one of five Bulls to reach double digits in kills with 13.

On Saturday, the Bulls dropped a four-game match at Ball State, 30-27, 25-30, 30-11, 30-24. Senior Amy Brown recorded her seventh double-double in the last eight matches with 48 assists and 15 digs. In the process, she moved into second place all-time in UB volleyball history in career assists (3,741).

Soccer

MEN'S

UB 2, Canisius 1
UB 2, Boston University 0

UB improved to 10-1-0 with a pair of non-conference victories over the weekend, downing crosstown rival Canisius, 2-1, on Friday in UB Stadium and Boston University, 2-0, on Sunday in Boston.

Against Canisius, junior Andrae Clarke converted off a shot deflection from Canisius goalkeeper Pat Owcarz to score the first goal of the game in the first 15 minutes of play. Sophomore Lee Catchpole picked up the Bull's second goal.

On Sunday, the Bulls earned their 10th win of the season, a 2-0 shutout of BU, a feat that has not been matched by the team since 1998.

Clarke continued his breakout season as he netted two goals on two shots for the Bulls.

UB will take on fourth-ranked Akron at 7 p.m. tomorrow in UB Stadium.

WOMEN'S

Eastern Michigan 3, UB 0
Central Michigan 1, UB 0

Michelle Lawrence notched a hat trick to lift Eastern Michigan past UB, 3-0, in MAC action Friday afternoon at Scicluna Field.

The Eagles jumped out in the first half, forcing six corners as the Bulls only managed two in the game, along with two shots on goal.

On Sunday, senior Anna-Lesa Calvert became just the third goaltender in the history of the MAC to reach 300 career saves, but the Bulls fell to Central Michigan, 1-0, at the Central Michigan Soccer Complex.

UB will try to rebound tomorrow as it hosts MAC leader Western Michigan in a 4 p.m. match in UB Stadium.

Cross Country

Bulls post season-best times at Paul Short Invitational

The men's and women's cross-country teams faced some of the nation's top programs on Saturday at Lehigh University's 32nd Annual Paul Short Invitational. The UB women finished 20th in a field of 47 schools, while the men placed 23rd against a field of 44 entries. Top programs from all three NCAA divisions competed. Columbia, ranked 20th in the nation, won the women's title with 121 points while Georgetown, ranked 12th in the country, captured its third consecutive men's crown scoring 123 points.

UB's men got a strong race from junior Dan McKenna, who finished 17th in a field of 299 men with a time of 24:24 for the 8K distance. The clocking, which put McKenna under a 5:00 pace, was a career-best, cutting 42 seconds off his previous best, set at the Central Collegiate Meet two weeks ago.

In the women's race, UB's top finisher was senior Jen Jezorski, who completed the 6K distance in 21:56.0 to place 63rd in a field of 310 women.

UB will host the UB Open on Saturday at Beaver Island State Park. The women's 5K race will start at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 11:45 a.m.

Tennis

MEN'S

UB 7, St. Francis (PA) 0

UB debuted its new blue-and-white court on Saturday with a 7-0 whitewashing of regional rival St. Francis (PA) at the University Tennis Club in the home opener for the Bulls (1-0). The court refurbishing gave the Bulls a distinct edge, as they did not lose a set to the Red Flash.

The Bulls will return to action at the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 20 in Hanover, N.H.

WOMEN'S

UB 7, St. Francis (PA) 0

The UB women also made quick work of visiting St. Francis on Saturday, earning a 7-0 victory in their home opener. In the nine matches, the Bulls (1-0) allowed just three games to the Red Flash.

UB will compete in the ITA Regional Championships, starting Oct. 22 at West Point.

Crew

Bulls complete best-ever performance at Head of the Ohio

UB pulled away from the competition at the Head of the Ohio on Saturday, getting the fall season off to a good start.

Among the competition this year were Villanova and West Virginia, two rivals who defeated UB last year.

In the open eights, UB boats finished first and second in the race, with times of 15:12 and 15:36. The team had entered this particular race only once before.

The freshman/novice eight won the collegiate youth eight with a time of 16:01, defeating West Virginia, which won the race last year. The squad had the fastest time of all youth eight's in the collegiate, club and high school categories.

The lightweight four also picked up the win in the field of 17 crews with a time of 17:38, two seconds faster than second-place University of Pittsburgh.

UB will compete next in the Stonehurst Regatta on Sunday in Rochester.

Basketball

Bulls announce 2005-06 men's and women's schedules

The UB men's and women's basketball teams will open their 2005-06 seasons with a doubleheader against Canisius College on Nov. 18 in Alumni Arena.

The game is the first of four scheduled doubleheaders for the two teams.

Over the course of the season, the men will battle seven teams that qualified for postseason play during the 2004-05 season—four teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament (Boston College, Niagara, Delaware State and Ohio) and three that advanced to the NIT (Western Michigan, Miami (OH) and Kent State).

They will host Buffalo State in Alumni Arena on Nov. 20 and travel to Boston College on Nov. 22 before heading to Las Vegas to play in the four-game Las Vegas Invitational.

UB will host Eastern Michigan on Jan. 4 to kick off the conference campaign.

The women will open the season, their first under new head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald, with three straight home games and later will participate in the University of Texas at San Antonio Wells Fargo New Year's Classic at the end of December before kicking off the 16-game MAC slate on Jan. 7 at Miami (OH).
