Nathan R. Matthews, assistant professor of theatre and dance, and acting director of the Music Theatre Program, served as producing artistic director and music director of the Riverside Opera Ensemble's world premiere production of "Parallel Lives" by Richard Pearson Thomas. Lynne Koscielniak, assistant professor of theatre and dance, was production designer for the project, which was performed in the Theater for the New City in New York City last month.

Donna M. Karczewski, clinical assistant professor and clinical director of the Nurse Anesthetist Program in the School of Nursing, was elected chair of the New York State Board for Nursing. Karczewski has served on the board in varying capacities, including as a consultant to the Office of Professional Discipline in the New York State Education Department.

Junhao Hong, associate professor in the Department of Communication, School of Informatics, and an expert on media and social change in China, has received a research appointment at Harvard University for the 2005-06 academic year. Hong, who specializes in the fields of international and intercultural communication, media and society, and information technology, will be a research assistant at Harvard's Fairbank Center for East Asian Research. He will spend part of the academic year conducting research projects in collaboration with members of the Harvard faculty and part of it at UB.

Kemper Lewis, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, has been named interim executive director of UB's New York State Center for Engineering Design and Industrial Innovation (NYSCEDII). NYSCEDII is New York State's only engineering design research center that utilizes virtual reality (VR) and scientific visualization and is among the nation's top few centers of engineering design and industrial innovation.

Mary Gresham, dean of the Graduate School of Education, and Ruth Bryant, assistant dean in the School of Architecture and Planning and chair of UB's Minority Staff and Faculty Association, have been named 2005 Black Achievers in Industry by 1490 Enterprises. This is the second time Bryant has received the award. They were honored along with 21 other recipients at 1490 Enterprise's 33rd Annual Awards Banquet held last week.
