Soccer

MEN'S

UB 4, Bowling Green 0
UB 1, IPFW 0

UB won its first MAC game of the season Friday, as junior Braden Byler netted two goals on four shots to give the Bulls the 4-0 win.

Play was tight entering the 25th minute of play in the first half, when

sophomore Lee Catchpole was yanked down abruptly in the box by a Falcon defender. The infraction led to a penalty kick taken by Catchpole, and he rifled the shot to the bottom right corner, putting the Bulls up 1-0. After Catchpole's ninth goal of the season, he caught junior Brian Knapp with a lofty pass, and Knapp fired an acrobatic scissor kick that pierced the twine, adding his fourth goal of the season.

With a 2-0 lead, many of UB's reserves entered the game and they made the most of their time on the field, playing hard and battling back against the fortifying Falcon offense.

UB held the advantage in corner kicks by a 6-0 count. One of those corner kicks, kicked by freshman Elbrus Tambi floated high and into the box and was catapulted skyward on a header from fellow freshman Dezi Lara Byler settled the ball and blasted home his second goal of the season.

The Bulls' reserves remained in the game at the start of the second half, outshooting the Falcons 11-6. Byler struck for his second goal of the game after being fed the ball in front of the net by junior Matt Grabowski.

In the last home regular season game in UB Stadium for senior captains Greg Galemore, Matt Stuczynski and Mbwana Johnson, the Bulls rallied early and managed to score the game's lone goal in the first two minutes of play send Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne to a 1-0 loss. The cold, frigid conditions managed to spark some conflict, as there were a total of 38 fouls between the two teams.

WOMEN'S

Toledo 3, UB 0
Bowling Green 4, UB 0

Boosted by 21 shots, the University of Toledo was able to shut down UB, 3-0, in MAC action at Scott Park on Friday afternoon.

Toledo took 12 shots in the first half, but it was a goal in the 41st minute that finally got the Rockets on the board.

Toledo added to its 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute when Candice

Choquette fed Kelly Langenbeck for a goal. Eleven minutes later, Rachel

White scored on a give from Tara White to close out the scoring.

With five members of the preseason starting lineup on the bench with

injuries, the Bulls must rally in their final three MAC games in order to

make the conference playoffs, thanks to a 4-0 loss at Bowling Green on

Sunday. All three games will be in UB Stadium, starting with a contest at 6 p.m. tomorrow against Akron.

UB squads fare well at Stonehurst Regatta

UB competed in the Stonehurst Regatta in a field consisting of some of the sport's toughest squads in the nation. The Bulls posted top-10 results in each of the three races entered. Last year, UB had two squads in the Varsity Eight and finished third and 19th, while the Varsity Four placed fifth out of a 17-team field.

The rowers will travel to Boston this weekend to participate in the Head of the Charles.
