Soccer

MEN'S

UB 1, Western Michigan 1 (2OT)
Northern Illinois 1, UB 0

The 20th-ranked Bulls men's soccer team concluded the regular season unable to nail down a victory in the final weekend. UB came up short of a win Friday afternoon as it managed to fight off Western Michigan in two overtime sessions to come away with its first tie of the season, 1-1. UB then fell at number 22 Northern Illinois, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.

Down 1-0 at the start of the second half, UB took advantage of key opportunities to wear down the Broncos defense. Four corner kicks and a 12-6 shot differential gave reigning MAC Player of the Week Braden Byler

a chance to play hero and continue his great play in his second start of the season. The junior forward netted the Bulls' only goal with 2:12 left in regulation with a shot from eight yards out, to tie the score.

Against Northern Illinois on Sunday, the Bulls flirted with the opportunity to go without a loss in its final two-game road trip of the season, but fell short, 1-0, in a game that tested both teams' toughness and endurance.

The Bulls ended their regular season with a 12-3-1 record-2-2-1 in the MAC-and tied Western Michigan for third place. However, UB clinched the third slot based on goal differential in league matches.

The third- and fourth-place finishers in the conference will host the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament, which starts on Nov. 8.

WOMEN'S

Akron 1, UB 0 (2OT)
UB 1, Ohio 0

Akron's Christine Vacha was outnumbered on her breakaway, but still managed to sneak down the right sideline and fire a laser from 20 yards out that flew over the goalkeeper and crashed into the right side of the goal to give the Zips a 1-0 win at UB in MAC action Friday night at UB Stadium.

The Bulls crowded the goal box on several occasions, but couldn't get a clear shot across on Akron keeper.

On Sunday, sophomore Kelley Vander Mallie scored her first collegiate goal in the third minute to lift the Bulls to their fifth consecutive win over Ohio University, 1-0, in MAC action in UB Stadium.

UB, (5-11-1 overall, 3-7 MAC) will wrap up its season with Senior Night tomorrow as it hosts Kent State at 6 p.m. in another MAC match.
