The search for a new dean for the College of Arts and Sciences is moving forward, with the first round of candidate interviews expected to begin soon.

Robert Daly, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of English, College of Arts and Sciences, and chair of the search committee, told the Reporter that the panel has received numerous CVs and has prepared a list of candidates who will be invited to Buffalo to participate in off-campus interviews. Once those interviews have taken place, the candidate pool will be narrowed and a smaller group of finalists will be invited to visit campus and meet with faculty, staff, students, members of the university's senior leadership team and selected community partners and individuals.

The search committee is seeking a replacement for Uday P. Sukhatme, who left UB last summer to assume the position of executive vice chancellor and dean of the faculties at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Bruce D. McCombe, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics, College of Arts and Sciences, and vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate School, is serving as interim dean of the college.

Ilene Nagel of Russell Reynolds Associates is assisting the committee in the search process. Nagel has played a key role in most recent administrative searches at UB, including that for the UB president and provost; the vice presidents for research, health sciences, external affairs and development and alumni relations; and the deans of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

A Web site has been established for the search. More information about the position and the application/nomination process may be found at http://www.buffalo.edu /cas-search/.

The search committee is composed of faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as representative of many of the schools that regularly collaborate with the CAS faculty.

In addition to Daly, members of the search committee are H. Austin Booth, associate librarian and director of collections, University Libraries; Jonathan Dewald, UB Distinguished Professor, Department of History, CAS; David Felder, professor, Department of Music, CAS; Lucinda Finley, Frank G. Raichle Professor of Trial and Appellate Advocacy and vice provost for faculty affairs; Mary Foltz, a graduate student in the Department of English; Jorge Gracia, SUNY Distinguished Professor, Department of Philosophy, CAS; Paul Luce, professor and chair, Department of Psychology, CAS.

Also, David Mark, professor, Department of Geography, CAS, and director, UB site of the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis; Andrea Markelz, assistant professor, Department of Physics; Charles Mitchell, professor and chair, Department of Geology, CAS; Mulchand S. Patel, UB Distinguished Professor, Department of Biochemistry, and associate dean for biomedical research and education, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; Stuart C. Shapiro, professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Nancy Smyth, professor and dean, School of Social Work; and Lillian S. Williams, associate professor and chair, Department of African American Studies, CAS.
